Synopsis

As next in line for the Evergreen crown, Prince Merrick Davendall’s future involves ruling, marriage, and producing an heir of his own. But he’s long been tormented by desires that are far from princely. Especially when the beautiful Cassius is promoted to be his new valet, and Merrick is struck by a longing like never before—a longing to know him far beyond royal and servant.
After his father’s passing, Cassius Havendale’s sole duty is to provide for his family. A promotion to serve a pampered prince is something he endures only for their sake. Surely Prince Merrick has no understanding of the true suffering of the common people, nor could he possibly understand what it’s like to desperately desire something he cannot have.
Except the prince is not at all what Cassius imagined. Kind, humorous, and caring to those in need, he also shares Cassius’s affinity for the arts. In fact, Merrick understands his deepest vulnerabilities in a most remarkable way.
As their affection deepens, the underlying tension between them becomes unbearable and they’re unable to ignore it any longer. But when the queen prepares a lavish ball with all the eligible ladies in the land in attendance, Merrick must fulfill his obligations to his country, and Cassius has the needs of his family to consider. They’ve long known their stolen moments would have to come to an end, but are they ready to give up one another and the idea of a happily-ever-after?
***PLEASE NOTE: EVER AFTER is a romantic fairy tale—minus the magic—that features one compassionate prince, one brooding valet, and plenty of angsty, forbidden love. It’s loosely based on a certain treasured fairy tale in a wintery make-believe setting that wouldn’t be considered contemporary but also isn’t based on any specific time period and doesn’t play by any traditional rules. *Please be sure to read the Dear Reader letter in the book before you begin.

Lisa’s Review

Ever After is a lovely fairytale-esque MM romance written by authors Christina Lee and Riley Hart. I have read books by both these authors and was very excited to see that they would be working together in this collaboration. There was never any doubt that I would end up loving this one. These authors certainly have what it takes to pen a seriously awesome M/M romance. A fantasy tale about a forbidden love that captured my heart.

Prince Merrick Davendall knows all about duty and the burden that it can cause to one’s heart and soul. He’s the celebrated Prince expected to carry on the royal lineage. The fact that his heart desires men and perhaps finding his own Prince Charming is something he keeps deeply hidden. Same-sex relationship are shunned and not accepted, especially coming from someone like the beloved royal Prince. Merrick accepts that he is destined to marry and never find his own happily ever after. However, what happens when the Prince falls in love with his valet? Can he continue to ignore what his soul longs for?

Cassius fills his new role as the Prince’s valet with the same professionalism that got him the job in the first place. He’s taken aback when he discovers the pampered Prince is not, in fact, who he thought he would be. Prince Merrick is warm, friendly, caring and calls to Cassius’s heart like no one ever has. Oh, what a complicated web is weaved as our two protagonists fall into each other wholeheartedly. Both understand that nothing can come of their affection for the other. But, the heart wants what the heart wants. In a world where their love would not be celebrated, but instead spurned, will Prince Merrick and Cassius fight for the chance to live out their dreams?

The book is well written and made me feel. I became wholeheartedly involved in the beautiful imperfection that was Prince Merrick and Cassius and so wanted them to get the happy forever they dreamed about. The feelings they shared, the profound connection…. It’s all there and so beautifully depicted. Both men discover just how much they have in common despite the gulf between them due to their societal status. Love is certainly worth fighting for and standing up for, something Merrick and Cassius come to realize.

You undoubtedly have to suspend disbelief when reading this love story. The authors never really pin down an era and there is a mix of historical aspects mixed with present day elements. I had no issues taking this book for what it is… a fantastic tale of two men who find love in a time when status and familial obligations were more important than true love. This was the sweetest of reads. The kind of story that calls to my romantic heart and left me happily sighing up until I read the last word.

Ever After is a wonderful fairytale that I easily got caught up in. An emotionally driven tale with a happily ever after. Highly recommended.

“No, Cassius. You are not simple.” Merrick shut his eyes, his lips trembling, his chest loosening in blissful relief as he let the words flow out of him. “You are pure and real and complicated. To someone like me, you might simple be everything.”
