Release Day Book Brief: Breaker of Chains (SPECTR Series 2, Book 4) by Jordan L. Hawk

breaker of chainsTitle ~ Breaker of Chains

Author ~ Jordan L. Hawk

Published ~ 16th March 2018

Genre ~ Paranormal M/M Romance

Big changes are afoot at SPECTR. John Starkweather, once a hotshot field agent, is now benched. Instead of chasing down demons during Charleston's biggest outbreak, he's stuck interviewing exorcists about a previous case. But what at first seems like a busywork assignment takes a darker turn, as John begins to suspect the increase in possessions might not be coincidence, but part of an unseen conspiracy.
The vampire spirit Gray was made to hunt demons and drink their blood. He and his human host, Caleb Jansen, ought to be at the forefront of SPECTR's field team. But their new partners refuse to let Gray use any of his abilities, let alone actually hunt and fight.
Fortunately, Caleb and Gray have allies outside of SPECTR: the only other living drakul, Drugoy and his host Yuri Azarov. Yuri and Dru live by no mortal's rules, and they can show Caleb and Gray how to do the same…depending on how far they're willing to go.
Because breaking the rules comes with a cost, and the price of Caleb and Gray's freedom may be the life of the man they love.

Cheryl’s Book Brief

Whilst the previous book Drinker of Blood could, I think, be read as a standalone, I don’t believe this one can. There is too much from the previous book that is taken up and run with in this one to make sense without having read the story from the start. That’s not to say you have to go all the way back to the start, but you’d have to at least read Drinker of Blood.

I can find absolutely nothing to complain about in this book. Any issues of pacing I might have had with the last book have been blown out of the window. The pacing is absolutely perfect, as is the character development. There are shocks and surprises, and the ending is built up in the way a storm builds – not slowly and calmly but with ever increasing pressure and tension. Not only is Caleb/Gray’s relationship with John tested to the limits, but everything they’ve worked so hard for, the relationships they’ve painstakingly built, not only with humans, but with the world and the society they inhabit, crumbles around them. Driven to the edge by intolerable pain, Caleb finally allows Gray to fully embrace his drakul nature, but it could well have meant the end for both of them.

I could not put this book down. It sucked me in from the first words and wouldn’t let go until the end. It was magnificent. That the author is a true master of her craft is evident in all her books and this one is no exception. There is nothing I can fault and no more I can say about the matter without gushing, except thank goodness it’s not the last.

On that count, I should warn you the book ends on a pretty spectacular cliffhanger that had be cursing the author. If you have issues with that you might want to wait until the next book is out before you read this one. That can’t be soon enough for me.

Mocker of Ravens (SPECTR Series 2 Book 1)

Caleb has spent the last six months adjusting to life possessed by the vampire spirit Gray. Unfortunately, after the events of Fort Sumter, the other agents of SPECTR view him more as a ticking time bomb than a co-worker.
The one bright spot is Caleb and Gray’s boyfriend, federal exorcist John Starkweather. But John has problems of his own. A supernatural killer is on the loose in Charleston, stealing the hearts of its victims to extend its own unnatural life.
With the help of a rookie agent, John, Caleb, and Gray must find the killer before it strikes again…or before they become the demon’s next victims

Dancer of Death (SPECTR Series 2 Book 2)

Revenge. Murder. Ballet?
Vampire spirit Gray wants to hunt demons. Unfortunately, the foolish mortals at SPECTR have put his host, Caleb, their lover John, and their partner Zahira on desk duty. Gray longs to leave Charleston with John, but if they flee, SPECTR will make them the hunted.
A series of paranormal murders returns the team to the field, at least temporarily. Ballerinas are being murdered by a vila, a demon that kills with dance. If they can’t stop the deadly attacks in time, one of Zahira’s friends may become the next victim.
And while they track the demon, an unknown entity has begun to track Gray…

John’s only solace comes in the form of his lovers: Caleb Jansen and the vampire spirit Gray. Caleb and Gray have their own problems, however. Unbeknownst to John, they’ve been tracking a mysterious entity across the city. And after they finally come face to face with their quarry, nothing will ever be the same.
