Synopsis

Can a swan make peace with his ugly duckling past?

Chubby geek Jimmy Zebulon’s heart broke the day his high school crush, Danny Parker, looked on as his teammates tormented Jimmy. Fifteen years later, Jimmy is long gone, and from his ashes has risen Graham Swann, a movie-star-handsome law firm owner. Graham thinks Jimmy and his past are long forgotten—until attorney Dan Parker shows up for his first day of work.

Getting injured playing college ball was the best thing that ever happened to Dan. It turned his future in a better direction and allowed him to emerge from the closet that trapped him.

Graham wants to believe his childhood dream can come true, but he can’t bring himself to tell Dan who he really is—and their pasts might ruin any chance for a happily ever after….

Freya’s Review

Plump, acne-ridden and gay, Jimmy G Zebulon was bullied in school. Jimmy also adored the star quarterback Danny Parker. When Danny didn’t intervene in a particularly nasty incident, Jimmy ran from the school crying. Soon after, he and his mother left town. Many years later Danny is the new employee at Jimmy’s law firm. Only Danny doesn’t recognise Jimmy because the ugly duckling has transformed into a swan and goes by a different name.

This story is another well-written tale from the Dreamspinner camp. Jimmy, now Graham Swann, is a lovely character born from the abuse of his school days. He’s athletic, intelligent, and has a fortress of walls that protect him from being hurt. He is passionate, yet restricts himself to hook up’s, not allowing himself the comfort or possible heartache of a relationship.

Since school, Danny has changed, he is a widower with a daughter. He’s an outgoing man who tries to help where ever he can. He isn’t aware the actions of his youth helped shape the man Graham became. The main cast also includes Terri, the snarky best friend and business partner who brings Danny and Graham together and Lacey, Danny’s daughter.

The story follows a pretty classic path. Danny tries to demolish Graham’s walls. Terri gives the odd nudge, and the exuberant, scene-stealing, Lacey, becomes the catalyst that they all bind around.

I greatly enjoyed reading Graham’s journey. The way he and Danny slowly come together is beautiful. The heat between them is delightful.

But, when the shit finally hits the fan I couldn’t help feeling disappointed that Lacey became the focus instead of the men. Perhaps it’s because this so often happens in stories. It’s a classic, well-trodden road in any story that includes children. It’s a statement that I feel a little guilty for saying since children should always be the centre of a parents’ world. Lacey had a critical, adorable, part to play in the story. But, for me, her inclusion in the Holy Shit moment, downgraded it.

Swann’s Revenge was a story that I read in a day. I loved Graham and would happily read any side stories from his past. Characters like him, melt me.

Meet Shira Anthony

In her last incarnation, Shira was a professional opera singer, performing roles in such operas as “Tosca,” “i Pagliacci,” and “La Traviata,” among others. She’s given up TV for evenings spent with her laptop, and she never goes anywhere without a pile of unread M/M romance on her Kindle.

Shira is married with two children and two insane dogs, and when she’s not writing she is usually in a courtroom trying to make the world safer for children. When she’s not working, she can be found aboard a 36’ catamaran at the Carolina coast with her favorite sexy captain at the wheel.
