Jane’s Review

Who We Truly Are picks up where Five Minutes Longer ended. You really need to read the first book in this series to understand what is going on. It's a paranormal romance that centres on an FBI team HERO (Human Enhanced Rescue Organisation) that's comprised of five enhanced humans and five regular humans. The enhanced gain their abilities around adolescence with the only external feature being a mark on their face under the left eye which is impossible to remove. The abilities that the enhanced have are varied and exciting. We were introduced to them in the first book and it's great to see the team develop and find out a bit more about the extent of their powers.

At the end of Five Minutes Longer we left enhanced team leader Talon Valdez in a tentative relationship with regular human team member Finn Mayer. Here we see the lovely way the relationship develops. I found them much softer and slightly more romantic than in the first book. We see a streak of jealousy from Finn when another regular team member appears to show Talon some interest but we also see more of his geeky nature, regaling the team with useless facts. Finn is just all round adorable.

The kidnapping of enhanced foster kids is still happening and Finn is sent, woefully underprepared, undercover to act as bait. Talon is against the idea from the off but Finn thinks that Talon doesn't think he's up to the job. Talon is just terrified for Finn and wants to keep him safe. He comes to realise just how much Finn means to him and the dawning realisation is sweet. However, Talon doesn't just see the threat to Finn’s safety solely from being sent into a dangerous situation undercover, he knows his own super powers are getting stronger and they are ever changing and they are still very unpredictable. He believes himself to be a danger to Finn be around because of something that happened in his past and he worries he’ll harm Finn. Conversely, when everything goes down in a rather exciting, explosive way, Finn isn't worried about Talon harming him at all. He has faith in Talon and in their love and it melted my heart a little.

The plot in this book really expounds on what happens in the first one. It is slightly more involved and includes a lot more world building which I really enjoyed. Sometimes I think paranormal world building can take a long time and becomes too convoluted which can make it hard to follow, not so here. It is detailed but not overly so, which makes it easier to follow the plot and the characters without getting bogged down by intricacies.

I really enjoyed this sequel to Five Minutes Longer, I enjoyed getting to know the team more and seeing their banter and interactions. The deepening relationship between Talon and Finn is adorable to watch and the plot was gripping enough to keep me turning the pages. The ending left me with a wry smile as one enhanced team member meets his new partner, setting it all up nicely for the next instalment. If you enjoyed Five Minutes Longer I think you’ll enjoy this even more, I certainly did.

five minutes longerFive Minutes Longer (Enhanced Book 1)

Talon Valdez knew when he transformed into an enhanced human, his life and his dreams were finished. Reviled, mistrusted, and often locked away, the enhanced were viewed as monsters, despised by the public, and never trusted to serve in the military or any law enforcement agency.

Years later he gets a chance to set up a task force of enhanced to serve in the FBI, but with one proviso: each enhanced must partner with a regular human.

Finn Mayer dreamed of joining the FBI from the time he was fourteen and made every possible sacrifice to make it happen, including living with his selfish mother and bullying, homophobic brother and never having a boyfriend. But his undiagnosed dyslexia stopped his aspirations dead in their tracks. His last chance is to partner with Talon, an enhanced with deadly abilities who doesn’t trust regular humans with their secrets and wants Finn to fail.

Four weeks to prove himself to the team. Four weeks for the team to prove itself to the public. And when another group threatens their success—and their lives—four weeks for them to survive.

Meet Victoria Sue

sue-bio-smHas loved books for as long as she can remember. Books were always what pocket money went on and what usually Father Christmas brought. When she ran out of her kids' adventure stories, she would go raid her Mom's. By the age of eight she was devouring classics like Little Women, and fell in love with love stories.
She's still in love with them. Any size, any shape, any creature —love is love, no matter what it says on the box.
In fact if they don't fit very neatly into any box she loves them even more!
She has a very patient husband and three wonderful children. In 2010 in search of adventure they all moved from the UK to the US and are happily settled in Florida.
