Blog Tour: Earthquakes by Kelly Wyre with Guest Post, Excerpt & Giveaway.

We are thrilled to welcome Kelly Wyre to Sinfully today on the Blog Tour of the latest novel in the New Amsterdam Series… Earthquakes.

Hi there! I’m so excited to be here today on Sinfully Gay Romance Book Reviews to talk about my new novel, Earthquakes: A New Amsterdam Story. It’s the next installment in the New Amsterdam series, and it involves guns and ballet, two of my favorite things.

To celebrate the release, I’m doing a blog tour, and no tour is complete without prizes, amirite? I’m giving away a $25 Amazon gift card, a lovely necklace with a quote from Sinatra’s, Strangers in the Night – “Love was just a glance away, a warm embracing dance away” – and a free eBook copy of the book!

How to enter? That’s easy… See the Rafflecopter Info below for all the ways to win!

And that’s not all…

Today one lucky commenter will win a free eBook copy of the novel! All you have to do is comment below. Say hi, tell me what you love to read, what you had for breakfast – anything goes! I love hearing from you.

Meanwhile, I think I’d like to chat a bit about the characters in this world. It’s quite the web they weave. See?

I know that thing makes MY eyes cross, so let’s break it down.

Today? We’re going to talk about Garreth Black & Jody McIntire

Sociopath: Noun. A person with a personality disorder manifesting itself in extreme antisocial attitudes and behavior and a lack of conscience.

Garreth’s picture could be next to that definition. If there are, in fact, pictures of Garreth to be had, that is.

He’s about 5’4”, rail thin, has black hair he often dyes red, bright green-blue eyes, and is covered with tattoos of saints in various poses of agony. I’m not sure he knows how to smile. Though, rest assured, if he does, the effect would be sincerely creepy.

Garreth is not a nice man. However, he is a useful one. Garreth used to handle the cash for a gang called The Saints. That’s a rather important and perilous position, as you might imagine, and usually quitting isn’t exactly an option. Especially not for someone who joined the gang when he was about eight, (some accounts have him in the gang as early as six; Garreth doesn’t talk about his childhood or parents, but Clark’s managed to ascertain that the parents were either dead from overdoses or simply gone. But not before something happened with Garreth’s mother that would curdle anybody’s blood; let’s say “abuse” doesn’t quite cover it, and Garreth is slightly less fond of women than men, though he generally dislikes people. It’s unlikely that Garreth had anything to do with his parents’ deaths, but that’s not been ruled out entirely, either. Especially in Mommy’s case).

So, this begs the question: how does one remove oneself from a gang situation one no longer desires?

Well, Garreth’s answer was homemade explosives with timers set off by a series of cell phones carefully positioned in every safehouse, storage facility, and meeting point any Saint ever occupied.

And so the Saints… went to heaven.

The only two left behind were Garreth and his… I hesitate to use the word “Friend.” Let’s call Jody his partner in crime. That was literally the case, as Jody was a former gang member too. Garreth (accidentally) saved Jody’s life once upon a time, and Jody’s been loyal ever since. Jody is as massive as Garreth is small: 6’8”, big and broad… think walking refrigerator with a temper. Jody watches out for Garreth and vice versa. So when Garreth left the gang, he took Jody along with him. They took their spoils (come on… they didn’t blow the places up BEFORE robbing them) and moved to New Amsterdam. They set up shop as mechanics and own Black McIntire Automotive Restoration and Repair. Garreth is good with money and business. Jody is wicked good with anything that has an engine. Pretty sweet life, really; and, for the most part, a straight and clean one.

How the hell did they get involved with Clark and crew? Well. It’s rumored that Clark, sensing a disturbance in the Force, was keeping a watch on Garreth. At some point, it is assumed that Clark saved Garreth’s life. With Jody as his measuring stick as to how to handle these situations, Garreth signed himself up for the Clark Cause.

(The other way this story goes is that Garreth found Clark and simply pointed out the pattern that Garreth had detected in the City, which ultimately led him to figuring out what Clark, Lucian, etc. were doing. Garreth, for his own reasons, simply stated he’d like in. And, figuring having Garreth as a friend rather than a foe would be better for everyone, Clark agreed. But who knows, really? You’d have to ask Clark. J)

As the Clark Cause is also the Lucian Gray Cause, Garreth joined forces with the Merry Band of Vigilantes (as Clark calls the men working behind-the-scenes trying to take down nefarious forces in New Amsterdam one mobster at a time). Money isn’t Garreth’s only talent: he is excellent at music and also at spotting (and stopping) trouble. Something about a man who isn’t afraid to put a weapon in the face of anybody – big, small, important, not important, male, female, child… Anyway. He works as a DJ for the clubs, Bliss and Break. Jody is the occasional bouncer there, as well, and also steps in to help out with club events.

As for Jody? He’s pretty simple. Both his parents died when he was little. One to cancer just before he was born and the other to a car wreck. On the streets at fourteen, he traveled around until he ended up in Garreth’s path and life. Jody is Southern, with a nice drawl, which is an amusing counterpoint to Garreth’s clipped tones. When Garreth speaks at all, that is. He’s not exactly a man of many words. One or two a month, really.

Since Garreth isn’t romantically inclined in any direction, he will likely not get his own story in this world. However, he does have a part to play in others. So he’s around. Lurking in the shadows. Contemplating eating you for dinner. While Jody looms over his shoulder with a grin, happy to gnaw on the leftover bones.

Please and thank you kindly, sir. I love me a leg bone at twilight.

PS There is a kick ass piece of Fanart done by the amazing Gaia to be found on my website. It’s also on my wall in my home. Check it out here.

Thank you so much for joining me on this last stop of the Earthquakes – A New Amsterdam Story blog tour! As always, if you happen to have questions for this character, please feel free to ask ‘em in the comments! It’s a good way to enter to win PRIZES (remember to comment – question or otherwise – to enter to win a copy of Earthquakes – A New Amsterdam Story!).

‘Cause PRIZES, y’all. They rock.

Thanks for reading!

Ellis Parker is a lucky man: he escaped his persecuting family, survived his tour of duty, and met Maxwell Clark in the city of New Amsterdam. Clark showed Ellis more than the ropes: Clark helped Ellis figure out who he is – a gay submissive with a massive fixation on a beautiful, mysterious ballet dancer named Bryn Rothe. Ellis knows a Good Man when he sees one, and he wants nothing more than to score a first date with Bryn.

Little does Ellis know that Bryn has a violent past that is crawling out of shallow graves to haunt him. Even his hectic schedule and beloved stage aren’t enough to distract him. It’s impossible for Bryn to figure out how he feels about Ellis with his demons between them, but when Ellis saves Bryn not once but twice, Bryn is forced to admit that there’s something about Ellis that Bryn might not merely want but need.

Together, they journey to the scene of Bryn’s original crime – Charles Towne, South Carolina. There they will dig up secrets that might explain Bryn’s tortured life but might also be his – and Ellis’s – undoing.

EARTHQUAKES: A New Amsterdam Story

~ Excerpt ~

Ellis had been close to martial artists when they were training. He’d sparred with Clark. He’d seen Kris and Daniel and all his friends shoot at the range. There was an economy of motion that the athletically and lethally inclined all shared. Ellis admired it, strived for it, and knew he’d never get there. He was a workhorse, not a prince of motion.

And as he watched Bryn begin to move – not merely stretch or contort but move – Ellis thought of churches and gods and houses of worship.

Bryn’s feet bent in ways Ellis had never seen. Bryn could balance perfectly on one foot or even a single toe. When Bryn shed his pants after a moment or two and took the first few steps in only a pair of snug briefs, Ellis wasn’t hit with a wave of arousal. He was struck dumb with awe. Every line of Bryn was defined. Even the lift of one arm and the point of his fingers were deliberate and beautiful. Ellis stood completely still and held his breath. He was in the presence of some sort of everyday magic and calling attention to himself might break the spell.

The concentration on Bryn’s face was unlike anything Ellis had ever witnessed. He didn’t exist for Bryn. Nothing did except the music, the motion, and whatever spirit had come alive in Bryn to make Bryn…shine. There was no other word for it. The light played through the windows and infused Bryn with incandescence.

And when Bryn started to dance, really dance, he outshone the sun. A turn here, a pointed foot there, a twist and a glide and… God, Ellis didn’t know what Bryn was doing. But he felt it. The music was hopeful and yet haunting, and Bryn’s dance tugged at every ache both old and new in Ellis’s body. Bryn’s face portrayed almost no emotion, but with every dart of his hand, every slice of his leg through the air, with every crumble, fall, and rise, Ellis was struck over and over.

I will try, said Bryn’s reach toward God and Heaven and all things on high.

Though I know I will fail, said the drop of Bryn’s arm.

I will carry on, said the sweep of his leg.

But I’ll lose, said an arch of his back.

I will fight, said a twisting leap.

I will fall, said the thuds of Bryn’s feet on the floor.

I want to love, said the open reach of Bryn’s fingers.

Please, said Bryn’s clutched fist.

Bryn’s expanse of chest, his shut eyes, and his rise onto his curled toes snapped something in Ellis, and as the music faded, Ellis couldn’t take it anymore. He shut off the music, strode to Bryn, and caught Bryn up in his arms. Bryn was sweaty and warm and breathing hard. Ellis couldn’t stop kissing him. Bryn melted against Ellis, resting heavily against him. Ellis ran a hand through Bryn’s hair.

“I see you,” Ellis whispered. “I see you.”

      Have a great day!
      Light & love. <3

  2. There was a short lived show on Fox called New Amsterdam did it in any way influence this series? Definitely not the immortal part from the blurb and excerpt.

    1. That show was WAY too short lived! I really enjoyed it. I loved that the main actor in that show went on to be a Lannister in Game of Thrones. XD

However, as far as I know, that show came well before I began putting together the city. So no direct influence, but that likely IS how I thought of calling my city New Amsterdam as opposed to New York. :D

Thank you for reading and the lovely comment! Have a great day!
