Mark’s Review

It’s no news that I like my historical novels and when I had the chance to read about Irish warriors and a time of castles and Celtic warlords, yes I couldn’t resist picking this one up! Also add the time travel aspect to it and this made for an extremely enjoyable read.

Carter goes on honeymoon with his sister to Ireland. Yes, you heard right - lol! His sister was left at the altar on her wedding day in Boston and not wanting to let the already paid for honeymoon go to waste then she goes anyway and takes her brother Carter with her. Their father was an Irish archaeologist and they had always wanted to see Moone Castle where their father had a dig there. He would tell them stories of an Irish Warrior and as children they were fascinated by this. The whole introduction was quite heartwarming especially when they eventually get to to the final destination of their journey and finally are standing before the grave of Fionn Ò Ciardha the warlord. I loved the way that this was all set up especially the tour guide telling the stories and legends about Fionn.

Now they are where they want to be Carter finds himself whisked off to another time. How this was done was very nice indeed. No machines or high-tech gadgets needed. Just some good old Celtic magic. When Carter finds himself back in time at Moone Castle in its heyday this is when he meets Fionn. This is where I got interested how the author was going to handle the whole time travel aspect and two people meeting from centuries apart. Well, it was nicely done and in the realms of fiction I was drawn into the developing relationship between these two MCs. Of course Fionn at the beginning is suspicious of Carter and Carter finds his mule headed warrior totally infuriating. But I loved how this all played out. As they became closer Fionn started to show Carter the skills he needs to live and survive in such a time. After all coming from the 21st Century, why the hell do you need a sword and learn how to hunt and trap your own food. It was pure entertainment listening to these two find their way to each other until they fell into each other's arms and then became inseparable. OK, would an Irish Celtic Warrior be gay? Well, I’m sure back then they wouldn't have had labels and may have been more accepting of human nature at least this is the way that things are portrayed in the book and I could definitely run with that for sure.

However, Fionn is caught between the devil and the deep blue sea as he must marry due to a contract his father made to another clan to keep the peace when Fionn was only a child. Now the other clan wants to collect on the agreement. It’s either marry the daughter of the the other clan or there will be war between the two clans. What a choice! Well, what actually happens and how this all turns out is well written indeed. But I’m not telling here, you’ll have to read the book for yourself. But the plot development was wonderfully done and kept me entertained all the way through. I could feel Carter’s longing to save the life of his beloved warrior.

I really enjoyed this book and it had all the elements that I could get my teeth into. The historical aspect was well done although I would like to have had a little more “history” in the historical. No wonder Carter had a crush on his warrior since he was a boy listening to the stories his father told him, Fionn is seriously one HOT warrior that made me go wobbly at the knees. Of course being an historical the question I always have is what are they going to use as lube once they get that far in their relationship? This always intrigues me as I have read some horrendous concotions and in all honesty very unlikely substances used, however what Carter and Fionn used worked for me anyway - lol! At least it was within in the realms of credibility. The time travel aspect was also well thought out and I could let my imagination go wild with all kinds of Celtic magic and mystery but above all the way that the relationship develops between Carter and Fionn. Also with things like this it can become complicated with timelines changing etc.when things are changed in the past but Ms Pine also does this very nicely adding to the romance of loves lost and won.

This is supposed to be the first book and I would really like to know when the second book is coming out as I would be very interested to see how Carter’s and Fionn’s futures playout back in the past. I’ll definitely be reading any sequels for sure. This was for me a thoroughly entertaining read that I could escape with for a few hours immersed in a world of myth, magic, Celtic Warriors and more.
