AJ Fabin’s Rules for Love… Or not

Elisabeth Staab

Of all the books I’ve written, By the Rules is one of my favorites. I probably say that every time, but By the Rules really was something special. It’s the story of AJ, a former male escort who’s hiding out in the tiny town of Evergreen Grove, and Hayden, a young corporate up-and-comer who returns home to the Grove after his mother lands in the hospital.

They hate each other on sight, and even if AJ wanted to date Hayden, he won’t. He can’t, because he’s developed a thick layer of cynicism. He has rules. Like the Wedding Crashers handbook, but not nearly as fun.

Some of AJ’s rules make sense. Most really don’t. But AJ has a sense of humor even when he’s shaking his fist at the world, so I thought I’d share some of his rules today. Not that I’d necessarily recommend following his advice… Like I said, AJ is awfully cynical. Cynical, but cute as hell.

Some of these rules appear in By the Rules – some are bonus.

Rule #1: Watch out for rich guys in business attire. They’re sleek, gorgeous, and powerful looking, like jungle cats, and as likely to take a chunk out of you when your back is turned.

Rule #29: Watch out if they hate small, cuddly things. If they don’t like animals, they might be psycho. Or have severe allergies. You don’t need snoring or the threat of an ice pick to the head keeping you up at night.

Rule #37: Don’t want what you can’t have. It’s a recipe for insanity, and a sure way to get taken to the cleaners.

Rule #55: “Complicated” will give you an itchy rash and a burning sensation in your special places. Keep it simple.

Rule #62: Trust is expensive. Don’t spend it unless you’re willing to be out on the street, wearing a cardboard box for pants.

Rule #74: Liars. Don’t even bother throwing them to see how far they can be trusted. Fuck ‘em.

Rule # 99: If anybody ever tries to tell you that you’re less than priceless, they can fuck themselves right off a cliff.

(that last one is my favorite)

So what do you think of AJ’s rules? Are you a hopeless romantic or a cynic when it comes to love?

He thinks I want him because of the rumors around town. Because I think he’s easy. I want AJ, because he’s AJ.

No liars. No suits. Absolutely no straight guys…

AJ Fabin’s list of rules keeps him safe. Since getting kicked out of his parents’ home and attacked by a former escorting client, his rules and his life in the tiny town of Evergreen Grove provide a quiet haven. He may be lonely, and he may stick out like a sore thumb, but the folks like him well enough. When he’s not dodging his old pimp, things are peaceful.

Hayden Price is having a quarter-life crisis. Engaged to a woman he can’t connect to and working a job he secretly hates, he comes to Evergreen Grove to help his mother through a health scare. Returning to his childhood home makes Hayden reevaluate a lot of things, including himself. When he meets AJ and finds he can’t stand the mouthy jerk—almost as much as he can’t stop thinking about him—he has a lot more to change than his career.

To be together, they’ll both have to break all of their rules.

By the Rules is book 3 in the Evergreen Grove series, but reads as a standalone.

  1. I'm afraid I must confess I'm more a cynic than a romantic when it comes to love...

  2. I loved this story! Watching them learn to trust and love each other gave me the warm and fuzzies!

  3. I think I'm a hopelessly romantic cynic: hoping for a fairytale while being quite convinced it won't ever happen... Probably the reason I'm currently single ;-)
By the way rule #29 is actually my favorite.
Thanks for the chance at the giveaway.

  4. I'm afraid that while I love to read romance books I'm a cynic when it comes to love.

  5. I can't tell if I'm a cynic with a romantic streak, or a romantic with a cynical one...

  6. I have to say I'm a cynic but I do love reading romance although I have my own issues with that too XD

  7. Definitely more toward the romantic side, I like to think I'm tough, but not so much! :)

  8. Congrats on the new release! I look forward to it. And I guess I am more cynic than romantic. Romance in these days seems to have disappeared.
