Adrian Gottlieb is winning at life. He's a successful video game designer with everything a man could ask for, including a warm comfy ride to Denver and a date for his sister's wedding. But he finds himself in need of a total reboot when he's left stranded at a snowy campground in Utah. Holiday plans? Epic fail.

That is until Noah Walters offers him shelter for the night and a reluctant cross-country ride. Nothing about the ultraconservative geoarchaeologist should attract Adrian, but once he discovers Noah's hidden love for video games, the two connect on a new level. Soon, a quiet but undeniable chemistry sparks.

Something doesn't add up, though. As the miles accumulate and time runs out, Noah must face the most difficult choice of his life. Meanwhile, Adrian must decide whether he's ready to level up. Is their relationship status worth fighting for, or has this game ended before it's even begun?

Book 1 of the #gaymers series

Lisa’s Review

Adrian slowly raised his hand. “I volunteer as tribute.”

Status Update is the first book in Annabeth Albert’s new series entitled #gaymers. It is no secret that I am a huge fan of this author and with each new book she releases she just gets better and better. Her books tell emotional, fun and heart-warming stories that leave you happily sighing in romance lala land. This book was no exception from her norm. From the first page I was hooked and wanted to see just how things would play out between the two seemingly opposite protagonists who don’t exactly start off on the right foot.

Twenty- five year old Adrian Gottlieb is a successful video game designer for a soon to be released video game that is already highly anticipated. Long hours at work have left Adrian with very little time for romance and dating so, needless to say, he is happy to be trekking in an R.V. from L.A. to Denver for his sister’s wedding with a long-distance boyfriend he has only recently met. What can go wrong, right?

Thirty-five year old Noah Walters is a geoarcheologist who will soon be approaching tenure at one of the most conservative colleges in the U.S.A. He’s a little socially awkward and is prone to the use of too-formal language when nervous. He’s holed himself away in an attempt to finish his writing in hopes that it will be published. The last thing Noah needs is having to come to the rescue of a stranded guy and his dog especially when he finds himself very attracted to the said stranded stranger.

Noah allows Adrian to stay with him for the night and then eventually reluctantly agrees to bring Adrian back to his family so that he can make it for his sister’s wedding. As the pair make their way to Denver the attraction between them becomes very apparent. However, while Adrian lives his life as an openly gay man, Noah is the complete opposite. Due to his super-conservative upbringing, Noah is firmly in the closet essentially shutting down and removing himself from anything that can tempt him and eventually out him. He has made a conscious decision to remain alone and celibate, unwilling to enter into a relationship and have to keep it a secret. When Adrian discovers that Noah has a hidden love for video games, it is just the olive branch he needs to make some headway with the reserved academic. Adrian slowly punctures the mighty fortress that Noah has built around himself. He is the one that definitely pushes for more and wants Noah to step outside his boundaries. Noah is someone who has stayed far away from any physical exploits with anyone. How is he going to stand his ground when everything in him wants to give in and succumb to Adrian’s charms and experiment? When Noah finally does give in, both guys have no idea just how powerful and real their connection would be. Falling for someone is always a scary thing, especially when the person you are falling for is your closeted polar opposite.

I loved the fact that while Adrian and Noah may have been outwardly different and certainly led very dissimilar lives, there were also many similarities between the two. Both have sacrificed a lot for their professional careers and both are lonely, with the major difference being that that Adrian is trying to change his status quo. Despite their obvious dissimilarities, they just seemed to work. Adrian is this lovable character and he is also a guy who is always searching and hungry, yet he does not know what he is longing for until he meets Noah. Noah needs to break free from the choke-hold that his conservative job, family and life have around his neck. He has no idea just how much he needs someone like Adrian in his life, not until the sexy gamer saunters into his atmosphere. Noah goes through quite a journey when it comes to his ability to truly accept who he is and it took him a while to believe that he deserved to live a life where he did not have to hide one of the most vital parts of him. He’s lived his whole life a certain way and being brave enough to question everything regarding how you are choosing to live your life is no easy task. There are many others like him. We are often defined by how we are raised and stepping away from that is not something that happens easily.

This was a tender, sweet and sexy tale as we watch the two men who are thrown together due to some unforeseen circumstances become everything to one another. Something neither one of them expected when they ventured on their RV journey.

All in all, Status Update was a wonderful start to this series. I love how real and different the characters this author creates seem to be. Noah and Adrian were no exception. They had their flaws but in the end all that matters is finding someone who accepts you, the good and the bad. Someone who wants you to fulfill your dreams and perhaps make some new ones with you. This is definitely a series to check out for lovers of the M/M genre. Highly recommended.
