Two very different men with a tumultuous history must overcome challenges from all sides and see past their society’s rules to realize they are destined for one another.
Raised to become Alpha of the Yafenack pack, Samuel Goodwin dedicates his life to studying shifter laws, strengthening his body, and learning from his father. But despite his best efforts, Samuel can’t relate to people, including those he's supposed to lead.
When Samuel meets Korban Keller, the son of a neighboring pack's Alpha, he reacts with emotion instead of intellect for the first time in his life. Resenting the other shifter for throwing him off-balance, Samuel first tries to intimidate Korban and then desperately avoids him. What he can't do is forget Korban's warm eyes, easy smile, and happy personality.
When a battle between their fathers ends tragically, Samuel struggles to lead his pack while Korban works to break through Samuel’s emotional barriers. Two very different men with a tumultuous history must overcome challenges from all sides and see past their society’s rules to realize they are destined for one another.

Liza’s Review

Samuel never liked Korban - didn't trust him, thought he was fake. Given that they lived in neighboring packs, both sons of the Alpha, they did have to meet up sometimes though - it just didn't mean that Samuel had to like it. He was used to keeping himself apart from others - he was going to be Alpha one day and that meant being responsible and always knowing what was going on. And Korban distracted him from that - Korban was likeable, always got on with others and didn't seem to have any sense of responsibility at all. So Samuel hated him.

The hate - I found over the years - was much easier to handle, much more comfortable and safe than the storm of confusion it replaced.

Samuel had always thought he would have years before he would take over as Alpha. He didn't care about his lack of social life, he was getting a little bit concerned about his lack of ability to tie with a female, but he figured his Father would help him out with that. Unfortunately the day he decided to speak to his Father about it, his Father was challenged, by Korban's father. The fight goes badly and in the aftermath Samuel finds himself Alpha earlier than he had anticipated, with a tied up tribute in his yard and a pack that didn't want to follow him.

I felt so sorry for Samuel - he was arrogant, stuck up and not able to get close to anybody. He spent his life surrounded by books, his computer and working on learning shifter law. But he knew nothing about life, so when he does something instinctively, his lack of understanding about his situation made him sick. He wasn't one of life's adorable characters, he was an egg in so many ways, but I felt for him all the same.

This is another amazing book in the Mates series although it can be read as a standalone. The world building that Cardeno C. has put into these books is first class - her rules about shifters are consistent and detailed, and they create an environment that is both familiar and yet unique all at the same time. Totally loved this book.
