The last thing Daniel, a hard-working public defender, expected to see the morning after a one night stand was his hook-up staring back at him from the wrong side of the law. Assigned to work his case, Daniel vows to keep things professional with Rafael but has a hard time controlling his craving for dominance, the control, and the connection they shared.
Rafael, a paid Dominant in the Chicago underworld, has been dealing with a cop problem for far too long. Used to sex with no emotion, he’s entranced with Daniel’s submission, his innocence, and…could there be something more?
Can Daniel clear Rafael's name, keeping him out of jail and in his life, with the odds, a cop, and the mounting evidence against them?

Liza’s Review

Daniel Caplin is a lawyer and spends his days working as a public defender, handling hundreds of cases. But seeing Rafael standing waiting for his turn on the dock, while the memory of having his tongue in the man the night before was still fresh, was more of a shock than he was used to. I'd like to say this was the start of a wonderful relationship between Daniel and Rafael, but there is so much more to Rafael than a big body and tattoos. Like him being a paid Dominant for one thing.

Rafael has problems with the police, which in turn will cause problems for Daniel. There's shady dealings at a club, or not, depending on how you read it. Then there are Rafael's trust issues - understandable, but still creating a murkiness to the story that made it difficult to read at times.

It was an odd feeling to be wanted this way - for himself - instead of being wanted for the services he provided.

Jessie is a good friend to Daniel, and a help in the case against Rafael. I liked him, but I couldn't help wonder about him either. Married, straight, and good at his job he has no problem attracting and turning down the ladies. But how many straight men truly want to hear all the details of their gay friend's exploits in the bedroom. And there are plenty of those.

One of the few small problems I had with this story is the way Daniel behaved. I get that he liked Rafael, I understand this was his first foray into non-vanilla sex, but playing about with a guy up on charges, when you work as a lawyer, is a dumb thing to do. I was not keen on the drug angle either - but that is a personal preference thing. Drug users can be unpredictable and even though I know Rafael didn't do it very often, I still didn't like it.

The kindness being bestowed upon him was more of an aphrodisiac than anything he'd ever experienced in kink.

This is a realistic book - not sweetness and light, more than a hint of BDSM, although there are a few sensitive moments. There are politics and backhanded deals, and an awful lot of murky dealings that make for an interesting plot line. The epilogue was dynamite and yep, I felt bad for Jessie. Maybe I'll get to read about him in book two.

Favorite line: I knew you would never wear the same suit two days in a row. You're gay, for God's sake.
