A Book in the Family Series
Short-tempered, arrogant heart surgeon Jason Garcia grew up wanting a close-knit family, but believes he ruined those dreams when he broke up his marriage. The benefit of divorce is having as much random sex as he wants, and it’s a benefit Jason is exploiting when he meets a sweet, shy man at a bar and convinces him to go home for a no-strings-attached night of fun.
Eight years living in Las Vegas hasn’t dimmed Abe Green’s optimism, earnestness, or desire to find the one. When a sexy man with lonely eyes propositions him, Abe decides to give himself a birthday present—one night of spontaneous fun with no thoughts of the future. But one night turns into two and then three, and Abe realizes his heart is involved.
For the first time, Abe feels safe enough with someone he respects and adores to let go of his inhibitions in the bedroom. If Jason can get past his own inhibitions and open his heart and his life to Abe, he might finally find the family he craves.

Macky’s Review

The Half of Us

Okay so it's back to my comfort read zone and another outing with Cardeno C. When I want sweet, sexy and satisfaction guaranteed it's never a hard choice if CC is involved and once again I got exactly what I wanted with this fourth offering from the Family series, which has been a winner with me right from book one. Before I go any further though, I have to put a big emphasis on the "sexy" this time. OH MY! I have to say, Jason and Abe sizzled between the sheets...and the dirty talk...WOWSER!!! I was doing the 'dirty talk happy dance' and grinning like a loon during every steamy session. Not that this is just the sum of its Hot! Hot! Hot! sexual encounters, there's a lot more to it than that. Surprisingly the storyline's level of angst is pretty low but that doesn't mean it hasn't got its moments of conflict and emotion running through, to add its touch of drama.

Dr Jason Garcia starts the story (having been married to a woman) as a divorced, love 'em and leave 'em type. A hard working Cardiothoracic surgeon, whose idea of downtime is going out on the prowl for someone to take back to his bed for a night of enjoyably hot, meaningless sex and then it's "wham bam, thank you man...bye bye" until the next one nighter comes around, because he never sleeps with the same guy twice. This is a man whose failure as a husband and father, has skewed his views on relationships and commitment. Originally wanting the happy marriage his parents had, he'd entered into marriage for all the wrong reasons, mainly denying his homosexuality which ultimately he couldn't run from, leading to a divorce after ten years that had probably been on the cards from the word go, but an inability to keep his dick in his pants hastened it on. Now, he's just an ex husband who sees his children every other weekend if they're lucky, coasting through life... cynical about love and who he could ever find it with.

He wondered if it was possible to have any version of the life he had wanted but thought he'd lost when his marriage deteriorated. Or, if he was being honest, well before that.

Marrying another woman was out of the question. Angela was smart, funny, and beautiful, but Jason hadn't been able to make things work with her, so there was no way he'd be able to sustain a relationship with another woman. He'd never considered men an option for anything else other than good sex...

That is until one night at one of his club haunts, he sets his sights on the younger, sweet, sincere, gorgeous, Abe Green, who's outlook is completely the opposite of Jason's. His goal in life is to find the one man for him and live happily ever after. One night fucks aren't usually what he goes for but there's something about this good looking older man that makes him want to throw caution to the wind for once, and on the night of his birthday he thinks what the hell when the guy approaches him and they go back to Jason's place where they end up having awesome sex; Abe letting go of his inhibitions in a way he's never done before. Cue the hot sweat inducing dirty talk!!! These two men couldn't really be any more different from each other but there's an instant attraction and an explosive sexual chemistry happening between them that goes beyond that one night, as Jason finds himself thinking about Abe far more than he normally would, enough to seek out his company again after a couple of months...and again...until eventually their meetings become a regular thing and Abe a regular visitor in his home.

All the while this tentative relationship is taking form, Jason is still having to deal with the obligations he has to Angela, his ex wife, also a busy doctor who luckily he's still friends with, and his two kids, who are growing up and hitting that hard work stage, especially his bolshy son who he doesn't connect with that well, selfishly at times, leaving most of the drama to his wife to sort out. Then in a weird twist of fate, Abe is brought into the family politics when it turns out that he has an unexpected connection to them all, outside of his relationship with Jason, and it's from this point on that things really begin to change for everyone involved. In a sense, his involvement and growing relationship with Abe begins to impact on his dealings with his wife and children in ways that actually make him step back and look at himself and his responsibilities more closely and through doing that he begins to finds the connection to his family that he'd always wished for.

On paper Jason's traits aren't really that admirable, but I still found myself drawn to him as a character and Abe, who you can't help loving because he's such a sweetie, was the perfect match for him, even though their differences in personality shouldn't really work as a couple...but they say opposites attract and that really is the case here. He's not an awful person but some of his actions have been, and still are questionable and a touch insensitive, especially in terms of Angela, who lived with his cheating during their marriage, and who, after the divorce shoulders most of the family fallout. It shows up in him as a touch of selfishness, that to be honest you can see is unintentional because he isn't deliberately being obtuse, he's just blinkered by the disappointment in himself not making the grade as the family man he wanted to be.

Earlier in the story his cousin who has just married his boyfriend; a concept he just doesn't get between two guys, tells Jason "If you get a chance at happiness don't squander it." and it looks like Abe might just be that chance for Jason. All he has to do is recognise that....

I think of all the books up to now, Jason and Abe's story really encompasses the true meaning of the title of this series because this is a book all about family values and I loved how by finding his true family in Abe, Jason finally found himself and a way to reconnect and redeem himself with the people who he truly loved but couldn't fully give himself to. So CC has delivered again and I got my feel good fix with a side order of off the scale hawtness that could melt the buttons off a fireproof nightie!!

"Does anybody else know what a dirty boy you are?"

Well if they didn't Abe, they sure do now...DAMN!!!!

About Cardeno C

Cardeno C. - CC to friends - is a hopeless romantic who wants to add a lot of happiness and a few "awwws" into a reader's day. Writing is a nice break from real life as a corporate type and volunteer work with gay rights organizations. Cardeno's stories range from sweet to intense, contemporary to paranormal, long to short, but they always include strong relationships and walks into the happily-ever-after sunset. Cardeno feels that characters write their own stories and just hopes to find enough time to get those stories on the page.
