Synopsis

STANDALONE second book in the LAMBDA nominated Rented Heart series.
Recovering addict Jamie Yorke has returned to England from California. With no home or family to speak of, he sticks a pin in a map and finds a small town in the Derbyshire Peak District. Matlock Bath is a quiet place—he just needs to get there, keep his head down, and stay clean. Simple, right? Until a chance meeting on the flight home alters the course of his so-called life forever.
Ex-Army medic Marc Ramsey is recovering from life-changing combat injuries while pulling nights as a trauma specialist at the local hospital. Keeping busy is a habit he can’t quit, but when Jamie—so wild and beautiful—bursts into his life, working himself into the ground isn’t as compelling as it used to be.
Marc falls hard, but chaos lurks behind Jamie’s fragile fa├žade. He’s winning his battle against addiction, but another old foe is slowly consuming him. Both men have weathered many storms, but the path to the peace they deserve might prove the roughest ride yet.

Jane’s Review

This is Jamie's book, who we met in Rented Heart, whilst you will know more detail and background if you've read Rented Heart, I think this book stands up quite well on its own. There is enough information in the first chapter for you to glean enough of Jamie's past and what he's working through without having to read Rented Heart first.

Jamie is a recovering addict and has had a year in California away from his past and his triggers and is doing well, but he wants to return to England and with nowhere to call home, and wanting to avoid London and Norwich, he sticks a pin in a map and heads to the quiet Derbyshire Peak District and to the town of Matlock Bath. On the flight back he is judiciously sat next to an ex-army medic, Marc who helps Jamie when the plane goes through some turbulence. Marc is recovering from having surgery on an injury he sustained whilst in active service, he has his lower leg missing. He is a lovely guy, one of life's *fixers*. He is always trying to help others and he works as a trauma specialist doctor in A&E.

After meeting on the plane, the two run into each other again at their local hospital, Marc works there and Jamie was there to get an appointment for the addiction clinic. They strike up a very strained and fragile relationship because both characters have issues they are dealing with. Jamie is winning his battle with addiction and is committed to it, but unbeknownst to him, another issue is creeping forward that prevents him from feeling ‘whole’ and recovered and worthy of Marc. Jamie is a complex character who carries with him overwhelming feelings of guilt and self-loathing about his past and what he put himself and others through. Marc is also dealing with his past and his issues around being in control. One of the things he struggles with is his lack of control over his phantom limb pain and other associated pain with his missing limb and he can't control his feelings for Jamie either.

This story is very character based and focuses very much on Jamie and Marc working on overcoming their own demons to forge a path forward together. There is not a lot of drama or angst, rather the author is focussed on each character and getting into their mindset and emotional state. I thought the writing was authentic and sincere. I love the British flavour that this author brings to the dialogue and the settings. I felt each emotion the characters went through when trying to start a new relationship in the face of issues like addiction, mental health and control. Another great heartfelt offering by this author of a couple of tortured souls looking to shore each other up. Fans of this author will lap this up and adore it, I did.

Ex-surfer-turned-businessman Liam Mallaney moved back to Holkham, Norfolk, to mourn the loss of his husband. Grief and loneliness keep him a solitary figure, and he likes it that way. There’s no room in his broken heart for anything else.

Rentboy Zac Payne left London and most of his demons behind, but he still only knows one way to make a living. When he spots Liam in a club one night, it seems he’s found his mark. But Liam proves nicer—and their connection far deeper—than he’d bargained for.

Their arrangement quickly becomes too complicated for Zac, who has other things on his mind: namely his BFF and wayward flatmate, Jamie. Zac owes Jamie the world, and even as Jamie’s drug addiction destroys all they have, Zac won’t leave him behind.

Besides, Liam knows nothing of Zac’s home life, too caught up in his own head to think much beyond the crazy heat he and Zac share. But when trouble comes to Zac’s door, putting his life in danger, Liam must set his grief and anger aside to pick up the pieces of Zac’s shattered heart and his own.
