Representing Queer Sex

One of my favourite things about MOON ILLUSION is how much Nathan and Cole care for one another.  The book begins several months into their relationship, which we see begin in HUNTSMEN, and at this point Cole and Nathan are more than just casual lovers and are beginning to navigate a serious relationship.  Throughout all the perceived obstacles that stand in their way—Cole is a werewolf, Nathan is polyamorous—they have a strong connection to one another. One of the ways I really enjoyed exploring and depicting their connection, their love, was through sex.

Though romance and erotica are often dismissed as nothing more than mindless smut, those of us who read and write in these genres know that sex scenes are opportunities to discover how characters relate to one another.  In THE BETTER TO KISS YOU WITH, the first book in this series, and HUNTSMEN, the sex between Jamie and Deanna, and Ryn and Kiara, are based on curiosity and desire, fraught with potential between Jamie and Deanna, and history between Ryn and Kiara.  Both books feature couples at uncertain stages of their relationship—Jamie and Deanna are new to one another, whereas Ryn and Kiara have years of distance between them.

In MOON ILLUSION, I had characters who had settled into a relationship, which allowed for me to write a different kind of sex.  Nathan and Cole have been together long enough that they know what each other like, and are unashamed of their desires. Though some of the specific sex acts they engage in are ones rarely depicted outside of pornography, it was important to me to write these scenes lovingly.  Queer sex is stigmatized in ways that straight sex is not, and when there are still so few representations of queer sex compared to straight sex, showing that queer sex can be loving, caring, and tender, while still hot and erotically satisfying, is crucial.

Some of my favourite stories that portray queer sex in this way are STORM SEASON, by Pene Henson, the LOVE IN LOS ANGELES series by Racheline Maltese and Erin McRae, and DARKLING by Brooklyn Rae.  These stories are love stories, and the hot, queer, caring sex between characters cements that.

Nathan Roberts was just your average polyamorous librarian living in Vancouver until his best friend, Deanna started dating a werewolf. While hosting the small pack in his apartment while they hid from the underground network of Huntsmen, Nathan enjoyed a casual fling with Cole, the pack leader’s brother. But now, he may just be falling for him.

When his neighbor is murdered, Nathan is convinced the death is linked to the supernatural, but Cole and their friends deny any paranormal connection. This leads to a fracture of trust in their relationship, and Cole’s pack is left to deal with an unknown killer on the loose. As Nathan pursues answers on his own, he must come to terms with the truth, and his feelings for Cole.
