Jane’s Review

This is a great story that I first read a few years back and the start of a captivating trilogy. The two main protagonists are one of my favourite m/m couples ever, Matt and Kira. Matt is a tough closeted cop. He is the head of a successful team of detectives dubbed the Fab Four who take down toughened criminals and break up dangerous narcotics rings.

Matt is wildly attracted to the new boxing coach at the gym where he trains with the other members of his team but being firmly in the closet tries not to pay attention to the attraction. Kira Takeo Franco, known to the detectives he trains as Frankie, is just the sweetest man ever. He tries really hard to win Matt over to the prospect of a date and to agreeing to date behind closed doors as Matt fears for his career if he's outed. Matt falls hard and quickly for Kira and their relationship is heartwarming to watch blossom. Kira introduces Matt to his parents Yumi and Sal. Yumi is Japanese and Sal is Spanish. Sal is also deaf so the family sign a lot. Kira takes Matt off for a vacation to his parents’ cabin and when they finally declare their love for each other it's a beautiful and poignant moment. They are also so hot together, N.R. Walker writes sex scenes so steamily well.

The plot flows along as we follow a case the Fab Four are trying to crack and the showdown, when it occurs, is heart in your mouth stuff. What unfolds is stomach churning and suspenseful and you are praying for it all to work out. There is no cliffhanger but you will immediately want to find out if there are any lasting repercussions and so you can go straight to the next books Breaking Point and Starting Point to follow their journey. It will warm your heart. Highly recommended.

Sean Crisden is one of the earliest narrators I ever came across and I fell in love with audiobooks listening to him. He has a deep, resonating voice that is lovely to listen to and I thought he captured Matt Elliott so well, he really is the voice of Matt as this story is told in first person pov from Matt’s perspective. He managed to convey the utter helplessness that Matt felt, in fact all of Matt's tumultuous emotions, especially in the hostage situation near the end. Also, kudos has to be given for being able to become Yumi, a tiny Japanese older lady so well. The timing and pacing was spot on and I thought he managed to ratchet up the suspense and terror of the hostage situation brilliantly. This audiobook isn’t too long at just 4 hours and 39 minutes so you never lose interest or your place and is a great choice to start with if you're new to audiobooks. After listening to this you will be hooked. A well narrated start to the series, I hope he continues with the trilogy as I will listen to them all.

Audio Excerpt

Meet N.R. Walker

N.R. Walker is an Australian author, who loves her genre of gay romance. She loves writing and spends far too much time doing it, but wouldn’t have it any other way.

She is many things: a mother, a wife, a sister, a writer. She has pretty, pretty boys who live in her head, who don’t let her sleep at night unless she gives them life with words. She likes it when they do dirty, dirty things... but likes it even more when they fall in love.

She used to think having people in her head talking to her was weird, until one day she happened across other writers who told her it was normal.

She’s been writing ever since...
