Genre ~ Contemporary M/M Romance

At the tender age of twenty-one, Kade Hutchins is at a crossroads, having endured enough hardship to last a thousand lifetimes. With money tight and career at a standstill, he's running out of time and options. The day he applies for a job that isn't exactly in his field of expertise and meets his new boss, Mr. Preston, is the day his fate is changed irrecoverably.

Luke Preston is the kind of man others envy. Rich, successful and unattached, his no-nonsense, ‘take no prisoners attitude’ has made him one of the highest profile litigators in Manhattan. He’s also a man with secrets. Secrets he wants kept under wraps since tragedy rocked his privileged existence to the core. When Kade, a man some fifteen years his junior steps foot inside his office, Luke wonders if his heart will survive.

Freya’s Book Brief

Kade wanted to be a lawyer, but tragedy stopped that happening. With finances tight and his emotions raw, Kade applies for and gets, a job at a family run law firm. The downside is that the position is - personal assistant to the obnoxious but brilliant Luke Preston.

I have read this genre of story many times before, and, I really enjoyed this one, too. There are some classic aspects, such as the spitfire of a female best friend, protective (and occasionally fickle) families, and the odd heart-warming good-guy side arcs. What I loved the most was, when I expected a storyline to go one way – it often didn’t, which was a welcome change from some of the other stories of this genre that I’ve read.

The story is written in the first person past tense, from Kade’s and then Luke’s POV’s. When I first saw the blurb and length of this novel, I wondered how it could last so long without becoming boring, but the author managed it. From cover to cover, I was thoroughly entertained. The suddenness of some actions/reactions surprised me, but it gave an added thrill to the story. The lust factor is skilfully executed, and the sex scenes are some of the best I’ve read in a while. Cold showers may be needed. There are some classic scenes with a not so typical twist.

At first, I was a firm Kade fan, as every time he thought he was making progress, Luke did something to reverse the process. But the more I read about Luke, the more I loved his character. He has a fortress of an outer shell that’s hiding something much more fragile. And as much of an ass as he could be, there’s something likeable about him and extremely readable.

L.J. Harris is a proven author with a string of superb stories to her credit. His Personal Assistant is another excellent addition to the list.

  1. That was a well written, intriguing review. I'm definitely going to read it based on the review alone...I'll just keep the cover to myself!
