Synopsis

A Brandt and Donnelly Caper: Case File One.

State trooper Brandt’s new assignment to infiltrate a sex-cam operation puts him in a very uncomfortable position, especially since he’ll have to perform naked on camera for his audition. Fortunately his partner and best friend, Donnelly, has his back—whether that means helping Brandt shop gay boutiques for sexy underwear or offering Jäger and encouragement while he researches porn.

Despite his mortification, Brandt gives the audition his best “shot”—and becomes an overnight sensation. But to meet the man behind the operation, he'll have to give a repeat performance, this time live on webcam opposite the highest bidder. Donnelly makes sure to win that auction for his partner’s sake, but their plan has a flaw: faking it is not an option.

In the aftermath, Brandt is a humiliated mess trying desperately to come to terms with what he’s had to do for the job and his own mixed feelings. But Donnelly has been on a journey of discovery of his own. Suddenly everything the two men thought they knew about themselves and each other gets turned inside out. Meanwhile, they still have a case to solve… but it may not be the case they thought it was.

Debra’s Quick Bite

I read this so long ago and still remember how much I absolutely loved this funny, sweet and hot friends to lovers story.  Based on the title alone, I would never have picked this book up (reminded me of the title of a bad 80's movie), but after a recommendation when I was looking for something light, I am so glad I read it.

The relationship between Troopers Ethan Brandt and Gabriel Donnelly was just plain fun. They get sent on a ridiculous undercover mission that requires the very “straight” Brandt to infiltrate a sex-cam frat house, including on-camera nudity. This sets up some hilarious shopping scenes with the secondary characters Bryce and Nestor that had me laughing out loud, Brandt getting schooled in sexuality by some of his new frat house friends and it also brings to light some very serious feelings his partner Donnelly has for him.

Synopsis

Talon Valdez knew when he transformed into an enhanced human, his life and his dreams were finished. Reviled, mistrusted, and often locked away, the enhanced were viewed as monsters, despised by the public, and never trusted to serve in the military or any law enforcement agency.

Years later he gets a chance to set up a task force of enhanced to serve in the FBI, but with one proviso: each enhanced must partner with a regular human.

Finn Mayer dreamed of joining the FBI from the time he was fourteen and made every possible sacrifice to make it happen, including living with his selfish mother and bullying, homophobic brother and never having a boyfriend. But his undiagnosed dyslexia stopped his aspirations dead in their tracks. His last chance is to partner with Talon, an enhanced with deadly abilities who doesn’t trust regular humans with their secrets and wants Finn to fail.

Four weeks to prove himself to the team. Four weeks for the team to prove itself to the public. And when another group threatens their success—and their lives—four weeks for them to survive.

Jane’s Quick Bite

This is a paranormal romance centering on a newly formed FBI task force that comprises both enhanced and regular humans. Enhanced humans transform at puberty and develop some form of enhanced power. Talon Valdez is an enhanced human who sets up the new task force, Human Enhanced Rescue Organisation (HERO). The team are a very interesting bunch of characters with such diverse enhanced powers that I found really intriguing.

Finn Mayer is the newest regular human recruit, set up to fail, he faces some challenges from other team members. After overcoming initial teething problems the team do gel and find themselves charged with changing the public’s perception of the enhanced. Along the way they meet with a few issues like a bank robbery, foster children going missing and a megalomaniac who wants the enhanced to take over and run the country.

In the midst of this a tentative romance develops between Finn and Talon. Talon messes up quite a bit but I did love them together, Finn softens Talon’s harder edges. The standoff at the end of the story is gripping and had my heart in my mouth. Nick J.Russo’s narration of this book is spot on! He captures Finn’s voice perfectly for me and he makes each team member sound different enough that it was always easy to distinguish who was speaking. The timing and cadence worked beautifully and the standoff at the end had me absolutely gripped, the tension was audible! All in all, an absolute winner of an audiobook and I can't wait to see if Nick narrates the next in this series.

The Long Way Home by Z.A. Maxfield

Synopsis

Ever since the accident that cost him his job on the Seattle police force, Kevin Quinn has been living with psychic abilities he refers to as the ‘gift that keeps on taking’. His attempts to use his talents to help the police have met with limited success. Yet, when teenage boys start going missing from the beach cities of Southern California, Kevin gets on a plane.

Connor Dougal has every reason to believe all psychics are fakes and charlatans. He’s still numb from the disappearance of his first love, a boy who went missing ten years earlier. Everything he aspires to is a direct result of that tragedy, even the acquisition of his detective shield. The irony of having to babysit Kevin Quinn is not lost on him.

These two suspicious men must develop trust and respect for one another to solve the case and, on the way, maybe fall in love.

Sue’s Quick Bite

This is the first story of  Z.A. Maxfield’s that I’ve read and I must say I like her writing style and the skilful way characters are portrayed.

Kevin is a psychic who’s trying to get to grips with his recently acquired gift. Connor, although sceptical of this ability at first, gradually accepts he’s genuine and not a fraudster as the two become friends, then lovers, and Kevin accurately guides the investigation into several local missing boys.

The plot moves swiftly, yet there’s plenty of time given to the development of the main characters’ relationship. There’s humour and some wonderful steamy moments, as well as a whole host of other characters and family issues that I don’t want to give away.

Among the Living (PsyCop book 1)

Synopsis

Victor Bayne, the psychic half a PsyCop team, is a gay medium who's more concerned with flying under the radar than in making waves.

He hooks up with handsome Jacob Marks, a non-psychic (or "Stiff") from an adjacent precinct at his ex-partner's retirement party, and it seems like his dubious luck has taken a turn for the better. But then a serial killer surfaces who can change his appearance to match any witness' idea of the world's hottest guy.

Solving murders is a snap when you can ask the victims whodunit, but this killer's not leaving any spirits behind.

Jay’s Quick Bite

Love amongst the dead can be the sweetest kind.

I’ll admit that I’ve only been reading MM romance for just over a year and still have many things to discover. The PsyCop series is always mentioned and I’ve finally gotten around to reading them - and they are amazing.

The first in the series, Among the Living, is a shorter novel, introducing us to an altered world and the development of the relationship of Victor and another PsyCop on the team. There’s creative world building as we discover that Vic can talk to ghosts and that psychics have been discovered to actually exist, be rated/certified, and join police forces to help solve crimes. We dive in to the newly formed relationship and a mysterious case of a serial killer who leaves his dead in unusual positions posed with strange items. Price does an amazing job of creating a mystery that alludes everyone until very nearly the end. The budding relationship of the MC’s is hot and sweet all at the same time.

I’ve read through the entire series after beginning with this book a week ago and it only gets better with intriguing mysteries and hot romance. This book is the gateway to an amazing series that is clever, detailed and has great characters. If you haven’t read it, get it now, and if you have read it, this is one series that can be re-read with joy.
