Review: Travel and Spice (Famous on the Internet #2) by Alina Popescu

TravelandSpiceTitle ~ Travel and Spice (Famous on the Internet #2)

Author ~ Alina Popescu

Published ~ 25th August 2017

Genre ~ Contemporary M/M Romance

Famous travel blogger returns home to have his life thrown off balance by his high school crush.
Dante Sandford is at the top of his game. He's paid to travel the world and share his spicy stories on his blog. He's still young, gorgeous, and confident. When Dante's high school reunion knocks on his door, he's reminded of everything he's lacking. More so when his old crush, Tommy Clancy, makes a pass at him. Or when the hot romance blows in Dante's face because of his lifestyle.
Tommy has always been the hottest man in Riverbrook. Possibly the world. He's stunning, smart, and the kindest soul Dante has ever known. He's also read Dante's blog along with all his steamy encounters. No wonder Tommy doesn't trust Dante for anything more than a casual hookup.
Dante returns to hometown Riverbrook to face his past of bullying and feeling like a misfit. He instead ends up dealing with the reality of being a travel blogger: relationships are close to impossible. That won't stop Dante from trying to convince Tommy his short-lived flings are not by design.

Freya’s Review

Dante travels the world and blogs about it. Tommy was the guy he had a crush on at school. Now in his 30’s, Dante attempts to put the ghosts of his past to rest by attending the school reunion.

As with all Miss Popescu’s stories, they never follow traditional paths. There is always an element of something different that I’ve not read before which is fantastic from my POV; considering that so far, this year I’ve read 70 books. This story has a chatty quality about it. It’s like the reader is being told the tale over a good meal and some wine. Having said that it contains a good balance of show and tell.

The subject of travel is obviously one this author loves; indeed, she is a travel blogger herself. The enthusiasm for the subject comes through in the writing, with little details every person who’s been abroad will identify with.

I found Travel and Spice to be an easy to read, light-hearted story with undertones of serious. This is a little bit of a departure from the usual type of story that Ms. Popescu writes. Therefore, I suspect some fans of this author will find the story has a marmite quality.

The story gets off the blocks with Dante on his travels, with more of the detail involving how he got to his destinations rather than the places themselves. This highlights not only the fact that Dante is always travelling, but it is during these times that he has the chance to reflect on his life. This story isn’t a travel guide, but about the person who is the travel guide. Then the story moves to focus on the reunion and its after effects.

As a teenager Dante had confidence issues, resulting from his school experience. But, through his travels, he has become his own person, happy to fight his corner, though some issues remain. Tommy shows a combination of insight and ignorance at Dante’s school life. Tommy was the bi sports star who no one dared to cross.

While, I was occasionally thrown over the style of writing, (and the flurries of the word smirked); having gotten into Dante’s head, I can’t imagine it being written in any other way. This is not a story packed with physical drama and angst-ridden scenes. While reading, there were plenty of times that I smiled, and a few times where my heart clenched. There are assumptions made by both parties, which added to the drama, and a lovely supporting cast. I greatly enjoyed the light sarcasm in the banter between Dante and his friends, Chris and Paul.

Travel and Spice is a light, sexy, feel-good, yet emotional story exploring what one wants out of life and finding that special someone to share it with.
