Truth or Dare

Flash Fiction in conjunction with SIP OF RIO reboot

The plane finally stabilized in the air, the shaking and sudden change in altitude easing up. Blaine didn’t like heights on a good day, but being caught in a metal death trap thousands of feet in the air for eleven hours was another kind of torture. He’d tried positive thinking, meditation, every relaxation technique he could find on YouTube and nothing had ever worked.

Glancing at Liam, Blaine saw he was browsing through the film selection on his entertainment screen.

“I’m bored,” Blaine said with an exaggerated sigh.

Liam turned to look at him sharply.

“Really? We’ve been sitting here for less than thirty minutes.”

Blaine tried to keep his bored expression unchanged as he answered – he didn't want Liam to know he was fucking scared and needed someone to talk to.

“Let’s play truth or dare,” Blaine said, sitting up straight in his seat.

Liam rolled his eyes, but turned off his screen.

“OK, I’ll go first. Truth or dare?”

“Truth,” Liam said.

“When was the most embarrassing time you farted?”

Liam laughed and shook his head, biting his lower lip as he looked at Blaine.

“It’s going to be that kind of game, isn’t it?”

“Alright, fine. The most embarrassing time I farted was when I was in college and was doing a presentation in front of at least fifty people. It was in one of those high ceiling nearly empty halls with the biggest echo you can imagine, and I had a microphone on the desk.” Liam blushed, his eyes glazing over as he remembered. Blaine couldn't help but smile widely, already anticipating where this was going. “I didn’t even feel the fart coming. It was one of those humongous farts that blindsides you and makes you wonder if your pants got away unscathed.”

Blaine laughed, imagining a younger Liam standing on the podium, looking awkward as hell.

“And so I turned to look at the screen to see if the slide loaded properly, my ass lining up with the microphone on the desk. The sound of the fart echoed in the hall for what seemed like ten years. Everyone stopped talking or even breathing and focused on me.” Liam shrugged, relaxing in his seat. “I guess it was a good way to get their attention before I started the presentation.”

“I bet that wasn’t your first thought back then, though,” Blaine said.

“No, it really wasn’t.”

They both laughed before Liam cleared his throat and said,

“Truth or dare?”

Liam considered Blaine with a thoughtful expression that was sexy as hell.

“Alright,” Liam said, a satisfied smirk on his lips. “You see that guy over there?” He pointed to a middle aged man three rows ahead. “With his shoes off and bare feet on the floor?” Blaine nodded. “Go to him, lean down close to his ear and tell him how much you like his feet.”

“Fucking hell,” Blaine said, but he smiled as he stood up and headed for the guy.

“Excuse me, sir?” Blaine said as he reached him, leaning down a little as Liam had instructed. The guy raised his head from his tablet and removed his headphones giving Blaine an annoyed look. “I couldn't help but notice your feet from where I was standing and I must say they’re quite exquisite.” The guy’s mouth opened and closed a couple of times, but no sound came. He frowned, glancing at his feel and then at Blaine. Taking advantage of his confusion, Blaine leaned closer and whispered, “I have a thing for feet and yours are...” He paused for effect before he said in the sexiest voice he could muster, “Lovely.”

Without waiting for a reply Blaine left as fast as he had arrived. The guy turned to stare at him, his face red and his eyes narrowed. As he sat back in his seat, Blaine winked at him. The man shook his head and turned back around, putting his headphones back on.

“I can’t believe you did that,” Liam said, staring at Blaine with wide eyes and an even wider smile.

Meet Teodora Kostova

Teodora KostovaHi, my name is Teodora and I live in London with my husband and my son. I've been writing ever since I can remember, but it became my full time job in 2010 when I decided that everything else I've tried bores me to death and I have to do what I've always wanted to do, but never had to guts to fully embrace. I've been a journalist, an editor, a personal assistant and an interior designer among other things, but as soon as the novelty of the new, exciting job wears off, I always go back to writing. Being twitchy, impatient, loud and hasty are not qualities that help a writer, because I have to sit alone, preferably still, and write for most of the day, but I absolutely love it. It's the only time that I'm truly at peace and the only thing I can do for more than ten minutes at a time - my son has a bigger attention span than me.
When I'm procrastinating, I like to go to the gym, cook Italian meals (and eat them), read, listen to rock music, watch indie movies and True Blood re-runs. Or, in the worst case scenario, get beaten at every Nintendo Wii game by a very inventive kid.
