Synopsis

After being incarcerated at a prison that leans over the edge of the world, Fayt must do whatever it takes to escape (or simply survive) the horrors that await him. You will take control of Fayt and guide him on his path, but be careful, for not everyone posing as an ally will lead you down the road to freedom.

Cheryl’s Review

I had absolutely no idea what to expect with this book. I’ve read “Choose your own path” books before - there are some bloody good ones out there - but I’ve never heard of an m/m romance “Choose your own path” book before and I couldn’t quite see how it would work. I have to say, I was very pleasantly surprised to find that it works very well. I think I might have struggled with a pure romance, but this was some very fine fantasy, so I suppose it wasn’t all that different from the fantasy books I’ve read before, except that it has the added flavour of sex.

Fayte is a little half-elf sent to a horrific prison under the control of a sick, sadistic warder. He’s small, pretty and sweet – exactly the wrong kind to make it in a place like that, full of desperate criminals and even more desperate men. From the very beginning he has hard choices ahead of him and so do we.

I played through the story a couple of times to get a taste of different middles and endings and they are surprisingly diverse. Will Fayte become a pirate? A good guy? A bad guy? A slave? Will he be happy, will he live in torment or will he die? So many questions, so many options and so much at stake for poor Fayte if you make the wrong choice.

I particularly like that the contents page clearly sets out the various option paths so you can jump back to make different choices if you really can’t bear where you’re sending the poor little guy, but as with life, you can only get the full experience if you stand behind your own choices and don’t try to go back.

The storytelling is superb. It’s hard enough to write a cohesive fantasy when it’s a linear story, but to keep all the different possibilities straight and still write a cracking story is some feat! It’s not something I would be capable of and the book is worth one star just for that. And another half a star for being brave enough (or mad enough) to even try.

If you’re a fan of “Choose your own path” books, you have to read this one. If you’re a fan of fantasy but are looking for something a bit different, you have to read this one. If you’re lazy and you like your stories spoon fed with minimum effort this probably isn’t the book for you as it requires firing up some brain cells and probably agonizing over choices.

All in all this was a fantastic experience and one I’m very glad I took a chance on.
