Valor on the Move by Keira Andrews

Synopsis

He’d give his life to protect the president’s son. But he never expected to risk his heart.

Growing up gay in the White House hasn’t been easy for Rafael Castillo. Codenamed “Valor” by the Secret Service, Rafa feels anything but brave as he hides in the closet and tries to stay below the radar in his last year of college. His father’s presidency is almost over, and he just needs to stick to his carefully crafted plan. Once his family’s out of the spotlight, he can be honest with his conservative parents about his sexuality and his dream of being a chef.

It’s definitely not part of Rafa’s plan to get a new Secret Service agent who’s a walking wet dream, but he’s made it this long keeping his desires to himself. Besides, it’s not like Shane Kendrick would even look at him twice if it wasn’t his job.

Shane’s worked his way up through the Secret Service ranks, and while protecting the president’s shy, boring son isn’t his dream White House assignment, it’s an easy enough task since no one pays Rafa much attention. He discovers there’s a vibrant young man beneath the timid public shell, and while he knows Rafa has a crush on him, he assures himself it’s harmless. Shane’s never had room for romance in his life, and he’d certainly never cross that line with a protectee. Keeping Rafa safe at any cost is Shane’s mission.

But as Rafa gets under his skin, will they both put their hearts on the line?

Debra’s Quick Bite

A forbidden flirtation and serious sexual tension between the quiet, closeted, twenty one year old son of the sitting U.S. President and a mild mannered Secret Service Agent who is pushing forty and turns out to be a total badass? How could I resist!

So many things worked for me here, action, family tensions, a delicious age gap, dirty talk and feelings that just won’t quit. As the attraction between the lonely, unhappy Rafa and his protector, Shane grows, so does the danger of Shane losing his job, but the two can’t resist each other.  They are sweet and sexy together. There are some unexpected turns in the story and their road to happiness isn’t easy, which made the story even more compelling. Don’t worry, it’s not a political story, but a romance with depth that you won’t regret picking up.

Bitter Legacy by Dal Maclean

Synopsis

Detective Sergeant James Henderson’s remarkable gut instincts have put him on a three-year fast track to becoming an inspector. But the advancement of his career has come at a cost. Gay, posh and eager to prove himself in the Metropolitan Police, James has allowed himself few chances for romance.

But when the murder of barrister Maria Curzon-Whyte lands in his lap, all that changes. His investigation leads him to a circle of irresistibly charming men. And though he knows better, James finds himself enticed into their company.

Soon his desire for photographer Ben Morgan challenges him to find a way into the other man’s lifestyle of one-night stands and carefree promiscuity. At the same time his single murder case multiplies into a cruel pattern of violence and depravity.

But as the bodies pile up and shocking secrets come to light, James finds both his tumultuous private life and coveted career threatened by a bitter legacy.

Jane’s Quick Bite

I can't tell you just how much I loved this book, it’s mesmerising in its brilliance. It left me with the biggest book hangover for days, which shows me just how much I've been affected by a story and the characters. I was left thinking about Jamie and Ben for ages afterwards and the tumultuous emotional rollercoaster I felt I'd been on with them. This is a gripping murder mystery and a compelling romance rolled into one. The balance between the two is spot on in my opinion. The writing is first class, the plot exquisitely crafted and the characters well observed. The characters are real and they are flawed but that makes it so much more authentic. This is a total page turner and and a truly stunning debut novel. If you haven't read this yet, you are in for a real treat.

Mark’s Quick Bite

Last week for my Quick Bite I featured book #1 and this week I’ll be featuring book #2 with the rest in the series in future Quick Bite posts. I can’t tell you enough how much I’m enjoying this series! Witty, entertaining, romantic, real life challenges for Skyler and Keith and of course the odd murder thrown in – LOVE IT!

Fate seems to pursue him especially when it comes to stumbling across a murder or two. Here it is to do with the suicide of a friend, or is it a suicide? Well, this is the one thing that Skyler is not prepared to accept and leads him into all kinds of trouble. Skyler falls for Keith big time, at least we the reader knows that the message just hasn’t got through to Skyler’s brain yet. So although they feel a deep connection for one another and the physical is HOT, both are infuriating together as well. It’s a kind of relationship that’s like a Belisha beacon, on-off-on-off-on-off, I think you have the picture.

Another murder solved, the bigger mystery surrounding the school still has to be solved, Sklyer has some serious thinking to do over Keith, and Keith needs to come clean if he’s going to keep Skyler! Yes, I’m really into this series.

Slow Heat by Leta Blake

Synopsis

A lustful young alpha meets his match in an older omega with a past.

Professor Vale Aman has crafted a good life for himself. An unbonded omega in his mid-thirties, he's long since given up hope that he'll meet a compatible alpha, let alone his destined mate. He's fulfilled by his career, his poetry, his cat, and his friends.

When Jason Sabel, a much younger alpha, imprints on Vale in a shocking and public way, longings are ignited that can't be ignored. Fighting their strong sexual urges, Jason and Vale must agree to contract with each other before they can consummate their passion.

But for Vale, being with Jason means giving up his independence and placing his future in the hands of an untested alpha--as well as facing the scars of his own tumultuous past. He isn't sure it's worth it. But Jason isn't giving up his destined mate without a fight.

This is a stand alone gay romance novel, 118,000 words, with a strong HFN ending, as well as a well-crafted, non-shifter omegaverse, with alphas, betas, omegas, male pregnancy, heat, and knotting. Content warning for pregnancy loss and aftermath.

Sue’s Quick Bite

This is a recent release from Leta Blake and quite a delicious lengthy read of 118,000 words.

I haven’t read many alpha/omega or MPreg books as they’ve never really appealed, but this one had received so many rave reviews I’d thought I’d give it a go. I’m glad I did and was relieved there’s no full length pregnancy or birthing as such, although I think Leta’s take on this would have been fine.

I knew Slow Heat wasn’t a shifter story and was set in an ‘omegaverse’. In this reality there are no females on Earth anymore and the omegas have developed to bear the children. The world building in this story is terrific—from the idea of a biologically and spiritually determined mate (Erosgape) to the contracts initiated between the alpha and his omega, from the education the alphas receive to the description of the heat the omegas had to endure. What I loved the most was the connection and bond that developed between Jason and Vale and how they dealt with the age gap and their past lovers.

There’s plenty of conflict throughout, in that the story and characters are set up so the events don’t run smoothly for the new couple. The slow build of acceptance and preparing for a life together, although lengthy, was well worth the wait until they finally consummated their bond. The sex scenes are smoking hot, and although there’s a lot of slick and squelching mentioned it all worked well within the fantasy story. Highly recommended.

A Time to Rise (Apocalypse of the Angels)

by Tal Bauer

atimetoriserevs_500[4]Rating ~ 5 Stars

Buy from Amazon

Synopsis

History says the Knights Templar were destroyed in 1307.
History is wrong.

Vampires haunt the sewers beneath Rome, revenants desecrate graveyards, ghouls devour helpless passersby, and incubi stalk dark alleys and seedy nightclubs in Italy’s capital. Deep in the Vatican, a brotherhood exists, sworn protectors of the earth, and they stand firm against monsters from the dark depths. Operating in secret and silence, they protect our world from the sinister, the etheric, and the evils that exist beyond the Veil.

But it’s a lonely life, and Alain Autenberg knows that more than most. His lover was ripped from him years ago, and he vowed never to get close to another soul again. Even when the loneliness presses down on him, and his empty heart cries out for something more.

Something more comes in Cristoph Hasse, a new soldier arriving in Rome to serve in the Pontifical Swiss Guard. Young, brash, and fitting in at right angles everywhere he goes, Cris struggles in the murky, deceptive labyrinth of the Vatican. Propelled forward by a past he can’t understand, Cris collides with Alain, and both men crash headfirst into the darkest secret of the Vatican…and of the world.

Freya’s Quick Bite

A story opening with a gun toting, vodka throwing, priest searching for paranormal activity. What’s not to love?

A Time To Rise is set in and about The Vatican. Specifically, a department who make sure Lucifer, and creatures of evil never freely walk the earth again. Father Lotario and Alain are considered a no-go area for all in the service of the Vatican. Lotario is the excellent offbeat priest, trained for his particular calling. Alain is the ostracized member of the Swiss Guard and working partner to Lotario. Angelo, from the local police, sends out the bat signal when he discovers ‘other worldly’ happenings. Only two other people in the Vatican know what their job entails – the Commandant and the Pope.

From the start, I found this story gripping and fast moving. There is no lull in the action. Even the vivid picture setting scenes are full of interest. As for the gore factor, it was enough to turn my stomach, but not to make me physically sick. The heat rating is pretty damned good too.

This story is so much more than a love story. It is murder, drama, intrigue, Templar Knights, mystery, the devil, action, and love. It made me laugh, gasp, have a lump in my throat (almost crying in public), cheer and sigh in delight. It is everything I love in a book.
