Synopsis

Wolf shifter Falco Gladstone knew Carter McCloud was his mate when they were in seventh grade, but school and the foster care system tore them apart. Years later, Falco is second in command of his Michigan pack, serving under an uncle who cares more about his own power than the welfare of their people. The alpha orders Falco to marry and produce offspring—but Falco’s already found his mate, and mates are forever.
Carter’s lonely life is turned upside down when he detects a familiar scent on the wind. The mates might have found each other, but their happily ever after is far from guaranteed. Falco’s commitment to Carter puts him at odds with his uncle’s plans, and when one of the alpha’s enforcers starts shadowing the couple, something must be done—something that will either cement their relationship or destroy it once and for all.

Freya’s Book Brief

It’s not often that I venture into the world of the shapeshifter, but I had to read this. It’s a tale of recognising love too late, waiting, and growing up to fulfil destiny amid controlling influences. After all, when a shifter finds a mate, that mate is for life.

Falco is a wolf shifter. Carter McLeod is his mate, but childhood events tear them apart before Falco realises what Carter is to him. Years later, pack politics and challenges mean that Falco’s uncle is Alpha. An alpha who will not stand to have any of his pack partner with another man.

The cast has a good range of characters. The uncle makes an excellent bad guy and instantly unlikeable. Falco has the courage of his convictions, knows when to keep his mouth shut and is hunkily adorable. Carter is gentle and kind. The dynamic between him and Falco is heart-warming. PC is Carter’s voice of reason/comic relief. And Mildred is a star. Oh, and there are puppies, not all the shifter kind.

The arc of the story is a little predictable, but, it’s still good reading. Lost Mate is a fast-paced novella, and the journey to happiness isn’t a straight forward one. There’s a power hungry, homophobic alpha, thug backup, beta with the pack welfare at heart, and some other history that hampers the way.

I found this story entertaining and heart-warming. It kept me glued to the Kindle until I finished the last page.
