Stories from the World

Thank you for having me here at Sinfully. It’s a pleasure to be here again. In truth, I should be here to talk about my new release, Toxic – the second novel in the Treacherous Chemistry series—but…well, real life has been barging in lately. Fiction has merged with real life stories, and perhaps it was Toxic that acted as a catalyst for me. That novel opened my eyes much as it was meant to do.

Toxic is a story that has been called ‘almost too real’, and it deals with a young man in a terrifying relationship. Adam, the main character in Toxic, is young, LGBTQ+, and his world is a dangerous place. And that is the mantra here today because Adam is not alone in having to face difficulties.

The 17th of May was the International day against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia. IDAHOT in short. Late on the ball, I gave this day my full attention and decided to invite the Wattpad community to share their stories from around the world on my platform where I knew their voices would be heard. Wattpad is a vast community of readers and writers who share stories for free—many of the members are young, and it has been named one of the safest places online for LGBTQ+ teens. Honestly, it’s an amazing community, and I owe so much to my followers there.

Anyway, I left an open invitation, a brief guideline, a short deadline, and was literally swamped with amazing stories—heartbreaking, uplifting, brave, wonderful, insightful stories from young people across the world. Young people who are dealing not only with their identity and sexuality, but also with the attitudes around them which varied from country to country.

I received entries from Nigeria, Norway, Brazil, the Philippines, Singapore, Dominican Republic, Indonesia, Romania, England, Australia, the U.S., New Zealand, Canada, India, Mexico, Hong Kong, the Netherlands, and Italy. And they keep on coming actually.
These young people voice fears and share moments from their lives, but most of all, they speak of the importance of having family and friends, both in real life and online, who support them. Some of these stories are tough to read. However, their words are full of hope for the future and acceptance.

As a writer, it’s sometimes far too easy for me to listen to the voices inside my head and shut out everything else. Writing for me is like taking a hike inside my mind, sometimes going as deep as I possibly can, then surface with a few sentences. As a reader, I want to escape the world and pretend that everything is picture perfect with happy endings. But, this project was the absolute opposite of that. I wanted nothing more than to listen, and for others to listen as well. I wanted people to share what they faced in their daily lives, and I wanted to be there to support them.

I posted stories every 15 min between 4 pm to 12 am, Wednesday evening, and watched as the support and love poured in from absolutely everywhere. These young people are bloody fabulous, and it gives me so much hope for the future even if things are not well everywhere yet. We have a young generation growing up in a world where the shadows are shifting, and, even if you’re stuck in a place where you’re not accepted, you can see the light somewhere else and perhaps at least feel that you’re perfectly perfect just the way you are. There’s hope. There’s community. You’re not alone.
There's a vast world out there, diverse, difficult, and yet we are similar. We are human, and in that humanity there's room for so much.

Avylinn Winter

Like a depressed moth drawn to a wild flame, Chris hoped that flame would brighten his life, not burn him alive.

Chris Sinclair fades into a grey world after losing his mother to cancer. When forced to attend a concert as a last attempt to coax him out of his shell, he discovers that life might not be as bleak as he first thought.

Dante Heron holds the audience between the tips of his fingers and the delicate bow, playing the violin as if every heart is his to command. However, something darker brews behind the façade, and Chris is determined to solve the enigma.

When Chris is offered the job of traveling around Europe with the famous violinist, he surprises himself by accepting. With no idea what awaits him, he's thrown into a world where emotions rule and rules are bent.

They're a perfectly dysfunctional match, but then there's always calm at the heart of the storm.

The Violinist (Now called Volatile), won a Watty award in 2015 in the LGBT+ category. The Wattys is the world’s largest online writing contest hosted once a year by Wattpad.

  1. Both of these sound great. Thanks for the chance to win!

  2. These do sound good. And your IDAHOT efforts are commendable. Of course there some stories that receive more attention, like Chechnya lately, but this shows that these phobias are global. - Purple Reader
