Hello again, everyone! I’m C.S. Poe and I’m so happy to be at Sinfully Gay Romance today with the second stop of The Mystery of Nevermore (Snow & Winter Book One) audio tour. Nevermore was narrated by the amazing Derrick McClain, and I was beyond excited to have him be a part of the project. As I mentioned over at My Fiction Nook, because no way could I ever narrate to save my life, I deeply respect those that do it for a living. I wanted to highlight some of my favorite moments with characters in Nevermore that I thought Derrick did perfectly.

(Be sure to check out the giveaway at the end too! I’m offering one of my short stories at each stop, with Gunner the Deadly up today. A steampunk adventure in the 1880’s Wild West, with crazed engineers blowing up cities, and a budding romance between a copper and outlaw.)

For my second discussion, I’m looking at what Derrick did with the ever-loyal assistant at Snow’s Antique Emporium, Max Ridley. Max is an easy-going, recent college grad, who took on a job at the Emporium first to pay rent, and then realized he quite liked the quirky shop owner and has since decided to stick around indefinitely. Max is a transplant New Yorker, and while that has never been specifically mentioned in the books, I feel like his laid-back, not-native vibes, have definitely made themselves known.

Take Derrick’s Max voice, for example. It’s pretty awesome. While him and Sebastian are similar in the way they react to situations around them, they are both wholly different and unique voices in the audio, which is just mad skill on Derrick’s part. You can actually listen to the sample at Audible here, which is the book’s opening scene featuring both Sebastian and Max. I love the playful banter Derrick was able to do with each of these guys, and you can hear one of my favorites around 2:10. It’s a great example of Max’s sort of “dude, it’s cool” temperate, versus Sebastian’s much more crotchety nature.

He held me tight, my face smooshed against his armpit. “Did you have another fight with Neil last night?”

“Why?” I asked as I pulled myself free from his hold.

“You’ve got some bad mojo following you around this morning.”

“It wasn’t a fight. It was— you know, I’m not talking about it while the smell of rot continues to permeate my shop.”

And before we go, have you seen the audio blooper reel me and Derrick put together? It’s fun, who doesn’t love the oopsies!

Synopsis

Snow & Winter: Book One

It’s Christmas, and all antique dealer Sebastian Snow wants is for his business to make money and to save his floundering relationship with closeted CSU detective, Neil Millett. When Snow’s Antique Emporium is broken into and a heart is found under the floorboards, Sebastian can’t let the mystery rest.

He soon finds himself caught up in murder investigations that echo the macabre stories of Edgar Allan Poe. To make matters worse, Sebastian’s sleuthing is causing his relationship with Neil to crumble, while at the same time he’s falling hard for the lead detective on the case, Calvin Winter. Sebastian and Calvin must work together to unravel the mystery behind the killings, despite the mounting danger and sexual tension, before Sebastian becomes the next victim.

In the end, Sebastian only wants to get out of this mess alive and live happily ever after with Calvin.

  1. Congratulations on the audiobook release. Though I love my audiobooks, I do not think I've heard any from Derrick yet. Maybe the Mystery of Nevermore will be my first ;)

  8. I'm not the biggest audiobook devotee, since I tend to prefer to read at my own pace. Derrick sounds very talented, though, and a good match for the story!
