Synopsis

Sequel to Thick & Thin
THIRDS: Book Nine

THIRDS Team Leader Sebastian Hobbs and Chief Medical Examiner Hudson Colbourn are as much in love now as they were nearly seven years ago when a tragic event on the job destroyed their relationship. The two drift together only to be pulled apart time and time again. When Hudson draws the interest of dangerous enemies, both within and outside the organization, Seb wants nothing more than to protect the man who still means everything to him.

As life-and-death events, an uncertain future, and startling truths draw Hudson and Seb to each other yet again, they must make a choice: trust their love and take strength from what they share, or lose what matters most… for good this time.

Jane’s Review

This is the hotly anticipated ninth book in the THIRDS series and one I was dying to get my hands on. It’s Seb and Hudson’s story and I couldn’t wait to see what we would get. It was more than I ever thought, I just adored it! We know bits and pieces of their story from previous books but not actually what happened with them. This book answers a lot of the questions that have transpired from the small insights we’ve had into their relationship so far.

We know that they once had a relationship whilst working on the Destructive Delta team at a time when workplace fraternization was frowned upon. We know that Sebastian Hobbs marked his mate Dr. Hudson Colbourn and then we know that in a breach of protocol civilian life was lost and the relationship ended. Hudson has stayed away from Seb for seven years at a considerable cost to himself. As a marked mate it pains Hudson to be physically apart  from Seb but guilt and  his conscience won’t allow Hudson to repair his relationship with Seb, even though we know that they still love each other. This pair are destined to be together and I just wondered how we were ever going to get there. This exchange perfectly sums up their relationship to me so far:

“You’ve ruined me, you know. I can’t love anyone else.”

“You need to move on Sebastian.”

“Then give me back the heart you stole from me.”

It is simultaneously heart melting and heart breaking and I thought that several times whilst reading about them. The push and pull of their relationship is so well nuanced, but I was still just begging for them to finally make a go of things.

The first part of the book is quite light hearted and I really enjoyed it. We also get to find out a lot more about Hudson’s English heritage and his family and what happened back in England to necessitate the move to U.S. This comes into play later in the book with more stuff happening with Wolf and TIN and I guessed correctly at the turn of events. It’s very clever and it all ties together with some things that were going on with Hudson at the end of Thick & Thin.

There is some action a lot later on in the book but it’s not so THIRDS driven as in some of the previous instalments. The action when it does come though, is heart stopping and well written, leaving you hoping and praying everyone makes it through.

I found this book to be more character driven than action packed as it does centre on their relationship a lot. But I really liked that. We needed to see what their previous relationship looked like, what went wrong and how they move forward from now.  It is quite emotional and the ending had me filling up, I was just so pleased with what transpired between them. It’s also scorchingly hot! It is well set up for the next book and I for one cannot wait. If you’re a THIRDS Nerd, you are not going to be able to put this one down. You will be rooting for them and they do not disappoint, you will melt or perhaps spontaneously combust!!

  1. Sounds kinda like a weak excuse keeping them apart, TBH. A mistake on the job got a civilian killed, but was it both of their, or either of their faults, directly? I'd think something more substantial would have separated them and kept them apart, especially with Hudson being mate-marked. I dunno; maybe it's because I'm still very early in the Thirds series, but from what I've been reading, Seb and Hudson shouldn't have parted, or if they did for workplace reasons, not for long. Others successfully kept secrets from the workplace: hello, Sloane and Gabe? Just sayin', it should have been something bigger keeping them apart, from what I've read in reviews, because I haven't yet read Darkest Hour. I'm set eager to read this, as I am with all Thirds books. My current favorite "light and fluffy" M/M series so far. 😺
