Oliver Hayes wears his heart on his sleeve, and his friends never let him forget it. Every Friday night spent at Wild Side, their favorite West Hollywood bar, Oliver’s lack of hookups becomes the hot topic. It’s not that he doesn’t want a good time. He just wants it to mean something, which is a lofty goal when he’s still pining after his childhood crush, Matt, who left ten years ago to start a new life in New York City.
Matt Daniels has always felt most at home seated at a piano. He might not have entirely fit in with his family and friends, but he was always able to find himself in music. Or at least he did before he gave up his dream a lifetime ago. Now, he has a successful modeling career and should be enjoying every second of it. Yet nothing feels right, and Matt fears he’s losing himself.
Just when Oliver decides to get over Matt for good, Matt waltzes back into LA. As Matt struggles to understand what he’s missing in his seemingly perfect life, he falls right back into leaning on Oliver for support. Things aren’t what they used to be between them, though. They tumble into bed together, and it’s hard not to continue ending up there. For the first time in years, Matt’s inspired to compose again, reigniting a spark he thought long extinguished.
But as always, Oliver can’t keep his heart in check, and soon Matt realizes he’s gone for Oliver too. The biggest question is, can he fully give himself to someone if he still hasn’t figured out how to love himself?
Gone for You is a contemporary new adult MM romance and also book one in Riley Hart’s newest series entitled Wild Side. I have read books by this author before and was very excited to see how this newest creation would turn out. There was never any doubt that I would end up loving this one. This author certainly has what it takes to pen a seriously awesome MM romance. A tale about two young men who find their way to one another.
Oliver Hayes has been in love with his best friend, Matt Daniels, for as long as he can remember. He fell in love with the standoffish young boy who kept everyone at a distance and made Oliver work to earn a place of trust. So, when Matt decides to move to New York by himself after High School, Oliver’s hope that something more than friendship would develop between them was crushed. Fast forward ten years and Oliver is still somewhat pining over his childhood crush. Just when he makes a decision to try and move forward with his romantic life, Matt comes back to Los Angeles to stay for a while. Matt is struggling with his life and his own unhappiness so coming back home to Oliver seems like the only thing to do. After all, he’s been the only person that Matt has let in and completely trusts. His one constant in his fast-paced life. As both men spend time together, they dive into the unexplored terrain of lust and sex. With Oliver’s heart already deeply involved with Matt, is this just a disaster in the making? What happens when Matt realizes that he just may be as emotionally invested as his best friend? Can he give his heart to the one person who has had his trust all along?
The book is well written and made me feel. I became wholeheartedly involved in the beautiful imperfection that was Oliver and Matt and so wanted them to get the happy forever that Oliver had always dreamed about and that Matt was only coming to dream of. When Matt returns home for an extended period of time it is like this thrusts him and Oliver back into their teen years once again. The feelings, the profound connection…. It’s all still there. It is something that Oliver has always felt. Matt was the one that shied away from thinking of Oliver in any light except for one of friendship. How could he be worthy of someone like Oliver? Matt’s whirlwind of a life is filled with definite highs and lows but his one constant was his friendship with Oliver. When Matt and Oliver finally do venture into the unchartered territory of sex and attraction, Oliver may be unwilling to walk away and give a relationship a try but can Matt face his demons head on and accept that he is worthy of love and affection?
While Matt’s internal struggles and journey was certainly a big part of this story, I do think there was a great balance between this and the romance that was between him and Oliver. There were certainly times that I wanted to junk-punch Matt and tell him to wake up. This book certainly exemplifies how difficult the path to love can be at times. After all, we are all fucked up in one way or another and the road to self-acceptance can be harder for some.
All in all, Gone for You is a beautifully written book that will certainly touch your heart. I highly recommend this read for all lovers of MM romance. I am definitely looking forward to more books in this series!
