Hi, all! Thanks for stopping by to help me celebrate the release of Open Case, the final novel in the Open Series. I’m excited to share an exclusive excerpt and give you a chance to win a few giveaways. Those of you who haven’t read the first two books, Open Seating and Open House, will want to catch up before you start this one.
Since the status change from friends to lovers, Seth Wilder and Bryce McFarland have had more challenges than the average couple. Through it all, they’ve been united, communicating without reservation in their quest for a happy ending. Now that it’s within reach, Bryce’s ex-lover, sociopath Owen Lightfoot returns in a spectacular fashion, determined to destroy the future they deserve.
As always, I’d like to thank Sinfully for hosting and my wonderful publicist J for her excellent help in organizing my blog tour.

Seth Wilder and Bryce McFarland deal with the aftermath of Owen Lightfoot’s destructive rampage. Once again, the insurance company denies the life insurance benefit despite the compelling evidence regarding the underlying cause of Mark’s death. However, they acknowledge their former employee’s complicity in the multiple crimes that have blindsided Seth and Bryce. They settle to keep their names out of the news, offering the couple a million dollars apiece, which they accept.
Owen learns of the big payoff and is determined to get his cut. Just when Seth and Bryce think it is all over, Owen reappears, and what follows tests the very limit of their endurance. Through the help of friends and relatives, Seth and Bryce find the strength to keep their relationship intact while seeking out the best way to stop Owen once and for all.
Straddling Bryce, Seth clung to him silently, appreciating the significance of the admission. Throughout their cruise and the weeks following, Bryce had proven himself to be a sympathetic, intelligent, and self-reliant man with a capacity for understanding that went beyond words. The tiny glimpse into his past—homophobic parents, Owen’s betrayal, and his subsequent disillusionment—had come in fits and starts, and always with a touch of self-deprecation. Bryce wasn’t the kind of guy who wallowed in misery, preferring to live in the moment with an optimistic eye on the future. In admitting he’d been abused by Owen, Seth understood Bryce wasn’t looking for sympathy. He would reject it if offered, but it explained why he was suddenly frightened on Seth’s behalf.
“Do you want to talk about it?” Seth asked softly.
“Not really.” Bryce sounded uncertain, so Seth decided to draw him out, hoping he’d relax enough to let down his guard.
“There’s no shame in admitting you froze,” Seth said matter-of-factly. “I almost pissed myself when confronting that guy. Physically, he’s intimidating as hell, and I was no match for him, but we didn’t have a history, so I was going in blind. If he’d abused me in the past, it would have put a different spin on everything. I probably wouldn’t have fought back.”
Bryce scowled and clenched his jaw so hard Seth was sure he’d crack a molar. The mere mention of Owen’s name was making him anxious. Seth decided not to push any further, and he was secretly pleased when Bryce snapped out of his meltdown and proceeded to clarify.
“It started out innocently,” Bryce said. “Back in those days I was pretty vanilla and didn’t know anything about breath play. I just figured Owen liked it rough, but the first time he wrapped his fingers around my neck and started squeezing, I panicked.”
“Jesus!” “Yeah, it was terrifying because I didn’t realize what he was doing or why. I was sure he wanted to kill me.”
“Why on earth would you think that?” Seth asked.
“We’d been seeing each other for over six months, and I was starting to complain about being his dirty secret. It ticked me off that we never went out in public, and sex was always rushed. He didn’t talk about a shared future or admit that he cared for me, much less loved me. I was starting to realize the romance was one-sided, and it was getting old.”
“Why didn’t you try seeing someone who was emotionally available?”
Bryce snorted. “Owen threatened to tear off my dick if I looked at another guy.”
“And in the end he cheated on you,” Seth said in disgust. “Don’t you wish you could go back in time and out him in front of his team?”
“If I had done that, I probably wouldn’t be here.”
“He’d have beaten me to a pulp.”
Meet Mickie B. Ashling
Mickie B. Ashling is the pseudonym of a multifaceted woman who is a product of her upbringing in multiple cultures, having lived in Japan, the Philippines, Spain, and the Middle East. Fluent in three languages, she’s a citizen of the world and an interesting mixture of East and West. A little bit of this and a lot of that have brought a unique touch to her literary voice she could never learn from textbooks.
By the time Mickie discovered her talent for writing, real life got in the way, and the business of raising four sons took priority. With the advent of e-publishing—and the inevitable emptying nest—dreams of becoming a published writer were resurrected and she’s never looked back.
She stumbled into the world of men who love men in 2002 and continues to draw inspiration from their ongoing struggle to find equality and happiness in this oftentimes skewed and intolerant world. Her award-winning novels have been called "gut wrenching, daring, and thought provoking." She admits to being an angst queen and making her men work damn hard for their happy endings.
Mickie currently resides in a suburb outside Chicago.
