Billie Montgomery was always known as the sick kid with the therapy dog. Dylan Bowden never had two nickels to rub together, let alone a true home to call his own. The two have been best friends since high school. They're always there for each other, so when Billie opens his own bakery called Montgomery's Sweets no one supports him better than Dylan.
The Sweetest Goodbye is a novella in Christina Lee’s series entitled Roadmap to Your Heart that was originally written as a part of the It Was Always You charity anthology. I love this series. This author has proven to me that she can write some seriously awesome M/M contemporary romance. In my personal opinion, I think that Ms. Lee once again did a great job penning a low-angst and tender-hearted tale about two young men who find finally see what has been right before them all this time.
Billie Montgomery is someone we have met previously in this series. He’s a character that won my heart as the youngest of the Montgomery siblings. As a younger lad, Billie was certainly more medically fragile and required a therapy dog. Billie is now a young man who runs a successful small business, Montgomery’s Sweets. While Billie still has his therapy dog, he’s now more of a beloved family pet. Dylan Bowden has found love an acceptance amidst the Montgomery clan. His friendship with Billie has brought him into the inner circle of a loving family, something he has craved since his alcoholic father kicked him out in high school after finding out Dylan is gay. Dylan and Billie have been best friends since high school and have been there for each other through the thick and thin. The last thing neither of them needs is to complicate their relationship by giving in to their physical urges. Because, that’s what a sexually heated exchange would mean between the both of them – nothing but satiating biological and inescapable needs. Yup. They can keep telling themselves that.
With Billie still hung-up on an ex-boyfriend and Dylan being this unapologetic flirt, they both know that giving in to their lust-fueled fantasies is a very bad idea. However, neither one of them can stop it from happening. After all, they’ve been friends for years and trust one another completely, so wouldn’t this natural progression of their relationship be the next logical step? It takes our two protagonists a little bit to see this. Pretty soon the stolen kisses and heated exchanges shared between the pair has them wishing for things they never would have imagined with one another. As their profound connection becomes deeper, they both have to learn to be vulnerable and completely open up to one another.
I loved adored this short novella. Watching the two young men open up and become utterly vulnerable with one another was beyond beautiful. The intensity of their relationship was beautiful as they both realize what they actually had been feeling towards one another for so long. It was simply the sweetest!
All in all, this author has delivered a sweet love story that also managed to keep me intrigued as I rooted for our two protagonists. As they begin to discover one another and explore what they could share, you could unquestionably feel the palpable and profound bond they shared. The Sweetest Goodbye turned out to be an enjoyable read. I can’t wait for more in this series.
