Synopsis

Where there’s smoke, there’s fire… Whenever Jones touches him, flames flicker in Truitt Larkin's smoky-gray eyes.

Growing up in Ember Peak, Colorado, Jones nurtured dreams as big as the Rockies. Why else would a flat-broke college student believe he has a shot with Truitt Larkin, the billionaire CEO of Larkin Corp? And, sure, Tru might own the fab, five-thousand-acre Ember Peak Ranch, where Jones is just the son of a ranch employee, but that doesn’t mean a future with Tru is doomed, does it? When he finally, finally convinces Tru to break his chiseled-in-rock no-sex-ever policy, Jones is sure smoke will never shroud Tru’s silver-flame eyes again.

But fire burns and dreams crash. And when Tru shuts down Jones’s hopes, Jones leaves Ember Peak—and a big chunk of his heart—for good.

Tru knows he’s responsible for fracturing his valued friendship with Jones. Indulging his attraction to the younger man was selfish and destructive—something he’ll always regret. When Jones returns to Ember Peak for a family wedding, Tru wants a chance to heal their friendship and give back to Jones the comfort of coming home. But sparks fly the moment they reunite, and they scramble to douse the passion that’s burned them both before. Yet a flicker of hope glows brightly, and soon they need all their courage to see their way to a future together.

Jane’s Review

What an absolute delight! I adored this book and read it in one sitting and went straight back and read it cover to cover again. That’s how much I love this story and especially the two main characters. Truitt Larkin is the billionaire CEO of Larkin Corp and the owner of Ember Peak Ranch in Colorado. He is fourteen years older than Jones Hudson, the son of a ranch employee. They have known each other since Jones was five years old and moved with his mother to the ranch. They have been in and out of each others’ lives ever since.

The story begins with them together for a week in Chicago with Tru there for business and Jones on spring break from the University of Chicago. He has just celebrated his twenty first birthday and turns up to see Tru at his hotel. Holy hotness! I was immediately under their spell. It is so obvious that Jones is so in love with Tru and Tru finally caves and gives in to his need for Jones. At the end of the week, without trying to be cruel, Tru ends what they started and wants to go back to being friends. He thinks Jones needs to go and live his life and was always up front during the week about that. Jones wants Tru, for however little or long he can have him. This all consuming love I felt from both of them had my heart burning. They then don’t see each other for the next three years but an event draws Jones back to the ranch and we see their reconnection and them admitting to what they both want and need. It is essentially their journey back to each other.

It is in the quiet, no big drama, way that this story grips you. It is essentially a hugely romantic, believable tale and the two main characters have such depth and warmth and integrity. You can see Tru trying desperately to do what he thinks is right for Jones and Jones saying I don’t need that. I only need you. He fights to do what he wants with his life and not what everyone else thinks he should be doing. Sometimes all Tru can see is the age difference, the power differential between them and their long complicated history. He doesn’t see Jones right in front of him, trying to make a stand for what he wants in his life. He wants to be Tru’s partner and wants Tru to respect his life choices and his ability to know what’s right for him. The romance is sweet, the chemistry electric and the sex is as scorching as the Colorado sun.

The ending had me as giddy as it had Jones. I was practically swooning at the big hot cowboy’s feet. It ends with what the author calls a HFN but seems like a bit more than that to me. Hopefully it’s the beginning of their HEA as the author has two more books planned and luckily we don’t have too wait long for them. Book two is due out 7th December 2016 and book three is due out Valentine’s Day next year. I cannot wait! Read it and fall in love.
