Keeping secrets from your best friend isn’t right, but it’s easier than admitting you’ve fallen in love with him.
Sharing a late-night kiss with his best friend, Alex, is Riley’s dream come true. Waking up to discover Alex was too drunk to remember anything is more like a nightmare. Scared the truth could destroy their friendship, Riley keeps quiet and pretends nothing happened.
Alex can’t shake the feeling that he said or did something stupid on their group’s drunken weekend away—why else would Riley be avoiding him? Although the explanation he finally gets sounds plausible, Riley’s still acting strange, and trying to figure out why that is unearths emotions Alex has worked hard to bury.
Riley knows not telling Alex how he feels is probably selfish, but he wants one last normal Christmas before he has to come clean and face the potential fallout.
Lisa’s Book Brief
A Christmas Kiss is a short and sweet holiday tale by author Annabelle Jacobs. There’s always a little magic in the air when it comes to the Christmas season; and, sometimes it’s that winter magic that can help two friends find their way to each other.
Riley and Alex have been best friends since the age of fifteen when they were firmly in their awkward stages. They’ve been in each other’s lives ever since, firmly cementing their bond as the years have passed. Riley’s feelings for his best friend have been more than platonic for a couple of years. He wants more than friendship with Alex and does not believe that Alex feels the same way about him. One drunken evening during a little getaway with friends at a lodge in Wales, Riley makes his move on Alex and the pair share a heated kiss. The problem is that Alex remembers nothing the next morning leaving Riley a little angry and heart-broken. Since the “kiss that is not remembered” happened, things are off between the two besties. Riley can’t help but want to keep his stance and Alex is wondering why Riley is acting all weird. Can our two protagonists figure things out before the holiday season comes to a close? With their friends’ involvement and the magic of the Christmas, can Riley and Alex finally see what has been right in front of them for quite some time already?
This was a cute and fluffy read with little to no angst. After all, who the hell wants angst in a Christmas story? Not me. I did have to somewhat suspend my disbelief a little as it was hard to imagine Alex’s head being so firmly entrenched in the sand when Riley was so obvious with his feelings. Regardless, I did enjoy watching the two young men find their way to something so much more than what they already shared.
This was a cute novella. There was something just so endearing about both Riley and Alex that had me rooting for them. All in all, this was a great friends-to-lovers holiday read perfect for when you are in the mood for a quick and cozy tale that will put you in the Christmas spirit.
“It’s for real, Ri.”
Riley’s smile was huge. “Yeah. It is.”
