Mark’s Review

So as I said, I can never leave a series up in the air and that is why I went straight on to book two in this series. There is something to be said in waiting until all books have been published before embarking on a series and I must admit it’s great being able to segue from one book to another especially when the ending of each book leaves you on a bit of a cliff hanger and wanting to know what’s coming next. I also love it when you start to get invested in a series, its characters and when the sequel is just that bit better than the first book.

Once again Skyler Foxe, English teacher extraordinaire, just can’t keep his nose out things. Fate seems to pursue him especially when it comes to stumbling across a murder or two. Here it is to do with the suicide of a friend, or is it a suicide? Well, this is the one thing that Skyler is not prepared to accept and leads him into all kinds of trouble. What I also liked about this book is the somewhat political backdrop that revolves around this particular murder-mystery. Skyler's two friends, Evan and Jeff, are war veterans, they served in the military, did incredibly heroic things but then one lands in a wheelchair and is discharged, the other gets a dishonourable discharge as it comes out they are gay. The only reason that Evan didn’t get a dishonourable discharge was due to his injuries. Even in the short space of time since this book has been written thank goodness things are better but for these young men it’s a disaster that can lead to all kinds of financial trouble not to mention the mental health issues of depression, etc. too. I felt so sorry for these guys, unfairly treated in all respects but still sticking together until the unthinkable happens.

It wasn’t only Skyler who was upset,  I was too! However, there are a few things that don’t add up for Skyler over Evan’s suicide and when the police initially arrest Jeff for the murder then that is the last straw. Of course this does not help the relationship with his best friend Sidney who has just gone and arrested Jeff. You know, I love the dynamics between these two. I can feel the bond they have for each other as friends, always there for each other, ribbing and egging each other on, always there for support, even if the friendship is temporarily on an hiatus due Sidney arresting Jeff. You just know they are going to work things out.

It’s also the dialogues that bring these characters to life for me, there were moments this time around where I was laughing out loud, possibly with a snort or two! I love a story that although you have the serious business of solving a murder it’s by no means dark and brooding but has a real romantic comedy feel to it too. It’s like Nancy Drew meets The Famous Five; add in a rainbow flag, glitter, Calvin Klein, a good dose of snark and you have pure entertainment at its best with Skyler Foxe and the SFC. I just love the way how Skyler’s band of friends were brought together in the first book, but in the second I really got to feel how this bond strengthens and deepens as Skyler always manages to brings them in on the trouble too. Yes, enjoying this bunch of zany characters all the way. Just listen to the excerpt to get the idea.

So, what s with Mr Wet Dream Sex on Legs? Well, Skyler falls for Keith big time, at least we the reader knows that the message just hasn’t got through to Skyler’s brain yet. So although they feel a deep connection for one another and the physical is HOT, both are infuriating together as well. It’s a kind of relationship that’s like a Belisha beacon, on-off-on-off-on-off, I think you have the picture. There were times I wanted to bash their heads together and then bash their heads separately. Skyler until now having only played the field and not sure about how to cope in a monogamous, long term relationship. Sort of scares him and yet knows it’s what he wants. Then we have Mr Only One Guy for Me Keith, who can get in a snit with jealousy over trivial things, this drives Skyler nuts. However, there is still a secretive side to Keith that still makes Skyler unsure of his motives, he knows the man can be trusted but then there are so many questions unanswered, especially when Skyler catches him doing something which raises the suspicions all over again, it would me too. About halfway though the book I had a theory about  Keith and who he actually is. I had to wait until the very end of the book, but – HA! – yes, I was right! Now the question is going to be just how are they going to work things out.

So another murder solved, the bigger mystery surrounding the school still has to be solved, Sklyer has some serious thinking to do over Keith, and Keith needs to come clean if he’s going to keep Skyler! Yes, I’m really into this series now and will be gracefully segueing myself to the third book with a gap so small you wouldn’t be able to squeeze in without lube – HA!

NARRATION

So first of all I’m seriously not going to add a lot here compared to what I said in my review of the first book. Joel Leslie still does a marvellous job and even felt that the voice characterisations have settled down a little compared to the first book. It’s good that the one narrator does the series as the voices have now grown on me. This is important, if the narrator changes in the middle of a series it usually has led me to dump the series too. However, after doing my research and looking ahead, I’m delighted to say the Joel Leslie stays with the series, so that makes me a happy boy – YEAH!
