Synopsis

Sparks ignite and tempers flare when a sexy, optimistic wedding planner moves his business in across the hall from a jilted, divorce lawyer’s practice.
“Look smart ass. This is the last time I’m going to remind you about breaking sections of the lease. If there’s a next time, I won’t stop until you and your frilly, white wedding shit is thrown out of here. Do you got it?!”
Wylde looked in Jacob’s pained eyes and answered in his deep voice. “Yeah, counselor. I got it.”
From high school, up until he became a successful attorney Jacob Snowden was convinced that love had it out for him. “Everyone left,” were the words he lived by. His mother, his high school sweetheart, his father, and his fiancĂ©, all left Jacob just when he felt it was safe to let down his guard. Not any longer. Jacob was a determined man, set at keeping people at a distance. If his six foot one, military-made body didn’t scare people off, his permanent scowl surely did. At almost forty, Jacob’s social life was non-existent, but he told himself his work fulfilled him. He helped people get out of their loveless marriages. Jacob Snowden was one of the best divorce lawyers on the east coast and was damn proud of it. So, imagine his disdain when a wedding planner moves into the suite directly adjacent to his… an insanely masculine, male wedding planner.
Wylde Sterling had made quite a name for himself in his hometown of Roanoke, Virginia, working for a wedding planner that catered to the elite. He was known for his charm and impeccable taste. Yep, he was incredible at giving couples the wedding of their dreams. But he wanted nothing more than to plan his own. After striking out in love more times than he cared to admit, Wylde decided to start his own business in a new city, hoping Richmond would give him a fresh start. Things started out wonderfully – until he started to piss off the angry divorce attorney next door.
Wylde could see past Jacob’s mean scowl, knowing there was a reason for it. It was the man’s defense mechanism, his means of keeping people away. Everything in Wylde told him to stay away, but he believed Jacob just needed to meet a man who had been hurt as badly as he had.
This title is a standalone that ends in an HEA

Jane’s Review

This is an enjoyable contemporary romance between a successful divorce lawyer, Jacob Snowden and his new neighbour in the same business premises, wedding planner Wylde Sterling. At the beginning of the story we find out that Jacob’s mum has left the family and his dad is an alcoholic. He spends most of his time with his high school boyfriend and they plan on attending the same college. Jacob doesn’t get the full scholarship he was expecting and as his dad steadfastly refuses to help and becomes abusive, he is left behind as his boyfriend goes off to college seemingly without a backwards glance. Alone and homeless, Jacob enlists in the Navy and serves for a few years. Through the Navy he manages to go to college and study law and he begins dating Mark. They don’t get to spend much time together as Jacob is either working or studying and it seems like he keeps Mark at arms length. After dating for 3 years, Mark wants to see more of Jacob and tries to find ways for them to be together. He wants more commitment and proposes. Jacob doesn’t reply immediately but does think about it and turns up to surprise Mark and accept his proposal. He gets more than he bargained for. Hurt again, Jacob resolves to bury himself in becoming the best divorce lawyer he can be and swears off relationships for good.

Wylde Sterling is a very successful wedding planner, he moves to a new city to open a new business and hopefully find a new relationship. He has been hurt in the past but is a romantic and believes in love. His business happens to be in the same building as Jacob’s law practice. They get off to a very rocky start with Jacob being his closed off, grumpy self. However, Wylde isn’t put off by Jacob’s scowling ways and begins to find ways to break down the walls guarding Jacob’s heart.

Even as closed off and seemingly grumpy as Jacob is, you understand his reticence since he’s been so badly hurt and abandoned in his past. Wylde is such a lovely character, I loved him from the start and I was rooting for these two to find a way to be together. I love how Wylde didn’t stand for any of Jacob’s bullshit and called him out on it every time. I really enjoyed the slow burn of this romance and it had some touching, romantic moments and a lovely HEA.

As a bit of a side story we get the reappearance of Jacob’s mum after 25 years. The reasons for her staying away and her appearance after so many years didn’t ring true with me. I really didn’t get this at all, though this didn’t detract from my overall enjoyment of the story. One thing that did detract for me though, was a very negative remark Wylde makes early on in the book about a date he’s on with a bisexual man. I just didn’t feel that was in keeping with Wylde’s character at all and it jarred with me a lot. (I read this as an ARC so some things may be changed).

Overall, I did enjoy this book, it’s such a lovely premise, the optimistic, loveable wedding planner and the scowly divorce lawyer navigating their way from almost enemies to a happy life together, with some lovely romance along the way.
