We are thrilled to welcome Kelly Jenson to Sinfully as she celebrates the release of Best In Show.
The Magic Playlist
I don’t actually listen to music while I write. I do enjoy collecting songs for my characters, though. I’ll hear something while I’m out driving, or as I write a scene or line of dialogue, a song or lyric will pop into my mind. These are the songs that make up my eventual project playlist.
Today I’m sharing a portion of my playlist for Best in Show, which is my first paranormal release, and therefore required a slightly different twist (to my mind).
Just listening to this song in relation to Best in Show makes me laugh. There Julian is, a mild mannered mystery writer, quietly making his way through life. Little does he know the simple act of adopting a big ginger cat from the animal shelter will turn his life into a magical mystery tour.
Cats is one of the few musicals I’ve seen live. I loved every minute because, well, I’m a cat person. Also, it’s truly a wonderful production. For years afterward, any cat who became a part of our family had a Cats name. We had Old Deuteronomy, Bustopher Jones and Grizabella. We never had a Macavity—which is only part of the reason I chose that for Mac’s name. The rest of it is that the name just suits him, so very much.
Julian is a bit of a brooder. He’s a writer, it goes with the territory. I like to think that underneath, he has resilient soul, however. He’s someone who can take days like this and hold on to them against days like that. With Mac in his life, optimism will come more naturally.
I couldn’t resist. This one is for Mac, my mischievous kitty-cat shifter. Mac is a perennial prankster. He loves nothing more than a good joke and until now hasn’t really suffered any serious consequences. Mac’s sense of fun definitely helps bring him and Julian together, in a couple of different ways.
I adore this song. I love the simplicity of the melody and the lyrics, and both make this a perfect addition to my playlist for Julian and Mac. Best in Show is a sweet story. It’s not high drama. It’s magic and mystery and two men learning a little about themselves and a lot about each other. Finding someone they truly feel they belong with.

Best in Show
Published ~ 27th July 2016
Genre ~ Urban Fantasy M/M Romance
Solitary mystery writer Julian Wilkes doesn’t want a pet, but his sister persuades him to visit Lingwood Animal Rescue, where he is immediately taken with a large ginger tabby cat. Before he can settle into the joys of cat ownership, however, he discovers something very unusual about his new companion.
Macavity Birch is cursed. By day he is a large tabby cat. At night he can be himself—a human male with ginger hair and oddly yellow eyes. He didn’t mean to end up in the animal rescue, but he never meant any harm when playing the prank that resulted in his curse, either. Happily, Julian adopts him. But while exploring his host’s home, he discovers the diary of a long-dead relative.
Unfortunately, not all of Mac’s ancestors are dead and buried. His great-great-great-grandmother is very much alive, and she’s a powerful witch who doesn’t take kindly to the sharing of family secrets. When Mac reveals himself to Julian in order to save him from bigger trouble, he achieves just the opposite, plunging Julian deeper into a magical mystery with him.
Meet Kelly Jenson
If aliens ever do land on Earth, Kelly will not be prepared, despite having read over a hundred stories of the apocalypse. Still, she will pack her precious books into a box and carry them with her as she strives to survive. It’s what bibliophiles do.
Kelly is the author of a number of novels, novellas and short stories, including the Chaos Station series, co-written with Jenn Burke. A lot of what she writes is speculative in nature, but sometimes it’s just about a guy losing his socks and/or burning dinner. Because life isn’t all conquering aliens and mountain peaks. Sometimes finding a happy ever after is all the adventure we need.
