Secrets and seduction make for an explosive combination in HelenKay Dimon’s edgy, thrilling new series, which kicks off with a novel about two men who can handle any threat—except the one posed by desire.

Fisher Braun knows how to keep a secret. As a covert paramilitary operative, his job—and his life—depends on it. He’s at the top of his game, ready for action and always in control. No enemy has ever brought him to his knees, but one lover has: Zachary Allen, the man currently sharing his bed. The perfect package of brains and brawn, Zach is someone worth coming home to, and Fisher hates keeping him in the dark about what he does. But the lies keep Zach safe. Until the day Fisher loses everything. . . .
Zachary Allen is no innocent civilian. Although he plays the tech geek, in reality he’s deep undercover for the CIA. In a horrible twist of fate, the criminal enterprise he’s infiltrated has set its sights on the man whose touch drives him wild. Zach would do anything for Fisher—except blow his own cover. Now, in order to save him, Zach must betray him first. And he needs Fisher to trust him with all his heart if they want to make it out alive.

Monique’s Review

Mr & Mr Smith by HelenKay Dimon starts with an explosive rush and I mean that literally! I loved how we are immediately thrown into the world of spies and assassins where HelenKay Dimon certainly knows how to create a very persuasive atmosphere.

She immediately pulled me into the twists and turns, the action and adventure and the intrigue and subterfuge. Where a killer instinct, quick thinking and physical and mental endurance are the only things keeping you alive, where the job becomes your life and your life is just another mission, with relationships a risk that can only compromise the secrecy and lies you hide behind. But when that steely resolve and isolation from ‘the real world’  is compromised by love… is trust the only thing left to rely on? Is nothing beyond sacrificing to get the job done?

Fisher Braun, a former Green Beret, now works for the Special Activities division of the CIA. As an agent his whole existence is built on lies, so when his lover Zach is kidnapped the two worlds he thought he had kept separate collide and Fisher has to face facts fast, that he no longer knows who to trust.

Fisher and Zach’s lives are fraught with danger, living life on the edge and steeped in subterfuge. As we traverse the world of espionage and power plays, it soon becomes apparent that their romance is as lethal as their occupations. Yet in each other they find the peace and love that they secretly yearn for, with moments of tenderness coexisting with intense passion and an emotional connection neither man can walk away from.

For the first half of this book I was ticking over nicely, thoroughly enjoying the story and the two main characters. But at the halfway point I started to feel like the author had inserted some unnecessary emotional conflict and sex scenes, with Fisher doing a great deal of internalising; pondering his insecurities and fighting his vulnerabilities, and I went from loving his bad ass to wanting to slap some sense into him. With poor Zach scratching his head as much as me with all the toing and froing.

There was so much potential in Mr & Mr Smith but sadly for me, after such a great start and a wobble in the middle, the plot then took a turn for the worse and had me shaking my head in disappointment at the execution of the nonsensical mission choice finale. However it did make for an explosive finish with some great action scenes.

HelenKay Dimon is so good at creating all action alpha heroes and I really like her writing style. Although this one didn’t work for me like I wanted it to, I would still pick up another book from her.
