An Interview with Myself: Rick R. Reed & His New Book, A Dangerous Game

Sometimes, I like to sit down and give myself a good talking to. Often, there’s scolding involved. Sometimes, compassion. And, as in the interview below, questions. Read on to see what makes me tick and to learn a little bit more about my new book, A Dangerous Game.

So, what do readers need to know about A Dangerous Game?

A Dangerous Game is my sort-of sequel to Tricks, which was centered around a male stripper bar in Chicago and the world of porn. A Dangerous Game is set in that same world, with an entirely different cast of characters. This time, though, the backdrop is a male escort agency and the two escorts who fall hopelessly in love. One is a newbie, down on his luck, and the other is jaded--and wants nothing to do with love. Here's the blurb:

Sex can be a dangerous business. So can love.

On the worst day of his life, Wren Gallagher wants oblivion when he steps into Tricks for a drink. When a mysterious stranger steps up to pay his tab, he offers Wren the key to fulfilling his dreams of prosperity and true love.

But appearances are not always what they seem.

His savior owns the escort agency À Louer, and he wants the young and handsome Wren as part of his stable of men-for-hire. Down on his luck, Wren figures, why not? He needs the money. When he joins, though, he doesn’t count on meeting Rufus, another escort with whom he falls hopelessly in love.

But their love story will have to overcome the obstacles of not only trading love for money, but À Louer’s dark—and deadly—secrets.

What do you hope that readers take away with them having read A Dangerous Game?

The satisfaction of reading about true love triumphing over the most difficult of adversities, including murder! I hope that they will come away aroused, stimulated, entertained, and with their little hearts warmed.

Is it true that your muse is a small but mighty 20-lb Boston terrier by the name of Lily? Does she offer good ideas and constructive criticism? Do you bribe her with treats?

It’s very true. And careful readers know that Lily has made several cameo appearances in many of my novels (she can often be seen being walked down a Chicago street in the background, either by my partner, Bruce, or myself…or both of us). She insists on these scenes in exchange for her insightful literary criticism.

What do you look for when you read a romance novel (or any novel really), and how do you incorporate that into your writing?

I want to be taken away. I want to be so swept up in the characters’ lives that I think of them as real people and, accordingly, care deeply about them. That’s all I ask, really, of books I read, and of myself as a writer. If you can do those things, without ever pulling a reader out of the story, you have succeeded as a storyteller.

Where do you see your writing career going over the next few years?

I have really become intrigued by the love story lately and I want to continue to grow and develop my own special brand of gay romance, with real stories about real men and the real challenges they face (see what I did there? I worked in my real initials). I’d like my gay romance stories to remain true to the experiences of actual gay men and deal with issues that face them.
