Synopsis

One guy intent on caution. One an adrenaline junkie. Love could be one risk too many.

March is determined to lose the numbness that accompanies a history of loss and blame. Desperate to feel something—anything—the adrenaline junkie base jumps off cliffs, soars on hang gliders, and embarks on dangerous sea-borne rescue missions. But any release he feels is fleeting, and when you play Russian roulette with fate, eventually you come crashing down.

No matter how hard Caleb tries to forget his past, a dark shadow is always behind him. When a bizarre turn of events results in him being trapped in a sea cave, Caleb wonders how his mantra—safety at all costs—could have failed him. On the point of drowning, he’s stunned when March surfaces in the cave.

March’s disregard for the rules saves Caleb’s life but gets March into a heap of trouble. Not least of which is the guy shivering in the boat next to him. March tries to ignore Caleb but it’s already too late. Together, they take small, awkward steps toward love. But Caleb’s past is waiting to sink in its claws…and this time, it could drag him to his death.

Warning: This book contains difficult flashbacks of child abduction and sexual violence, but also the incredible perseverance of two men who never give up on love—or each other. Bring your tissues and a heart that believes in the resilience of the human spirit.

^^^ This…..THIS. Take this warning seriously people. This book is not for everyone and if you do plan on reading this, go in with your eyes open.

Give Yourself Away by Barbara Elsborg is her latest stand-alone M/M romance. I will start by stating that I am a huge fan of this author and her witty and unapologetic writing style. I did, however, have a really hard time getting through this book. If I were to rate this book solely on the overall story arc, it would not sit at a 4 star rating. This was definitely one of the more somber, emotionally angsty and darker books by this author. Ms. Elsborg is no stranger to diving into some very difficult issues in her books and she does not hold back with this one. It’s gritty and intense. Despite the fact that this sort of storyline was not really my cup of tea, I can’t ignore the fact that this author’s writing is stellar and she does write some great suspense.

Without giving too much of the storyline away, this book alternates between the past and the present and tells the story of Baxter and Tye (past) and March and Caleb (present). Baxter and Tye are two young boys who experience what anyone would consider horrific and terrifying. They have both been molded and shaped by this as adults and what happened to them in the past certainly has lingering effects and plays a huge role as to how they are both living their lives as adult males.

Baxter and Tye are ripped apart as the two young boys and when they meet again as adults (March and Caleb) it is something neither was expecting. Both March and Caleb are these complex characters and this author does a wonderful job stripping away the layers and intermixing it with some heavy steam and a suspenseful storyline. The road to healing was not without its bumps and bruises. There is so much that each man must let go of. The mystery aspect that takes place in the present was well done. It kept me turning the pages completely engulfed in all that was happening. Further, as in most Barbara Elsborg books, we get quite a few hot and heavy scenes. I loved how passionate Caleb and March were with one another as they explored all that was between them.

Once again Barbara Elsborg has penned a captivating and moving tale with Give Yourself Away. Again, I will repeat that this book is not for everyone considering the fact that the author touches on child abduction, rape and slavery themes. The Epilogue had me happily sighing and feeling very satisfied and I am so glad that we got such a heart-warming end considering the harsher aspects to most of the book.
