If you like contemporary gay romance with real characters in a setting that's a little glitzy and a little gritty, you'll love The Runaway Model. This full-length 75,000 novel is a complete in one volume, and it's absolutely cliffhanger free.
It isn’t very often that a new author appears on the scene whose work blows you away, leaving you desperate for more. Parker Avrile is definitely one of those. This is her first published full-length novel, as far as I know, yet it has the polish, passion and inventiveness you’d expect from a much more seasoned author. It’s as though Ms. Avrile burst out of the egg, fully formed and ready for the highly-competitive world of gay romance. Trust me, this talented writer is a contender, and I have little doubt that she will quickly become one of those highly-respected authors at the top of the heap. She’s certainly gone straight to my own personal “must-buy” list with her very first novel.
“Runaway Model” is an action-adventure, stalker, kidnap, rock-and-roll, billionaire adventure. Well that’s not entirely true. The guy with the money is more like a half-billionaire, and the rock-and-roll star isn’t some young overnight sensation, but a worldly, seen-it-all frontman of a still-popular band, with a fair number of miles (and too many bottles of booze) on him at the ripe old age of 26.
But that doesn’t keep Kyle, a lonely, closeted gay kid in Manchester, England, from being in love with the fabulous Stoney. Worshipping from afar, too much of his time is spent on Stoney blogs and online fan clubs. Sadly, the only one who seems particularly interested in this skinny kid with beautiful eyes is his schoolteacher. He hasn’t touched him inappropriately, but he has touched him, and keeps singling him out. He is determined to get closer, offering to tutor Kyle, an offer he easily declines. This guy is just creepy and Kyle is too smart not to know what he’s trying to get his hands on – him. It goes as far as the creep dating Kyle’s single mother to get closer to him. When he tells his mum, she accuses him of trying to keep her from finding happiness. Kyle’s got no choice. The only way to save himself and his mother from his persistent stalker is to get out of town. He’s only sixteen, but lies about his age, manages to get a passport and visa and heads off for the U. S. He lands in Vegas, and the fun begins.
He does get to meet his beloved Stoney in a club on the Strip, and invited to his room for, well… you know what. But Stoney doesn’t know that Kyle is underage and Kyle doesn’t want to be jailbait for Stoney, so he slips out when Stoney goes into the bathroom to clean up. And, since Kyle is also a bit of a kleptomaniac, he manages to steal Stoney’s signature ring on his way out the door.
The next couple of years see Kyle coming of age in Las Vegas. He grows into model-stunning good looks, a great sense of fashion, and a young man who likes the gifts that wealthy men are prone to give him in return for his company. The relatively innocent klepto has turned into more than a bit of a hustler. Still into Stoney, his blogs and YouTube accounts are enormously popular. It’s while he was chasing down Stoney, with a select group of fans that he runs across the gorgeous, young, almost-billionaire Bryce, who made his fortune trading oil leases on the Gulf Coast. Bryce knows he’s being hustled, but he’s a man who has been alone too long, avoiding relationships that he knows are probably more about his money than his hot body or his good soul. But those eyes. Despite his best intentions, he falls for Kyle and can’t get him out of his mind, even when Kyle runs, as Bryce always knew he would. Unfortunately, Bryce cannot escape the beautiful young man. Those eyes stare up from every newsstand at every airport. Kyle has become a very successful model, in his own right, and is taking the fashion world by storm. His face is everywhere.
Bryce is not the only one who knows that face and longs for Kyle. The magazine covers are like a beacon calling Kyle’s stalker to him, and suddenly, he’s everywhere Kyle is. America was not far enough for Kyle to run to escape his demented stalker.
I won’t give away the exciting action that takes off once the stage is so artfully set. It’s a huge part of the fun of reading “Runaway Model”, experiencing it all directly from the page. Let’s just leave it in Ms. Avrile’s capable hands. She has a real knack for heart-stopping danger, Special Forces mercenaries, and executive jets landing in the swamps of New Jersey.
I rarely enjoy reading a book as much as I did “Runaway Model”, and never one from a debut author. This book is simply a pleasure as wonderful as it was unexpected. To make things even better, this talented newcomer, Parker Avrile, has sowed the seeds of a wonderful new series with a wealth of inventive subplots and secondary characters, even in the very first installment. She’s also resolved the arc of this book while leaving enough tantalizing threads dangling, that I can’t wait for the books that follow.
If I didn’t know better, I’d suspect that “Parker Avrile” was the nom-de-plume of a well-established, best-selling author reinventing herself – that’s how confident and polished her work is. There’s not a word out of place, a character left undeveloped. She reveals her characters subtly, through their words, clothing, thoughts and reactions and most of all, delivers a page-turner I couldn’t put down.
If you’re looking for a well-written adventure involving beautiful and successful young men, if you’re into watching characters develop and take shape right before your eyes, if you want to have a heck of a good time reading, you must not miss “Runaway Model”.
