Exclusives Blog Tour: Yesterday by Mickie B. Ashling with Exclusive Excerpt and Giveaway

Please join us in welcoming Mickie B. Ashling to Sinfully on her Exclusives Blog Tour.

I’d like to thank the wonderful people who run Sinfully for hosting my blog tour visit. Yesterday is a period piece, a stand-alone novel, set during the final months of the Pahlavi dynasty. The time and place aren’t conducive to romance, especially between two men, but love and logic are rarely compatible as Kamran and Grady soon find out. Can a chance meeting alter one’s destiny? The answers are revealed within the pages of Yesterday.

The striking cover was designed by multitalented author and cover artist Catt Ford. Aside from the giveaways, which are listed on the Rafflecopter widget, I bring an exclusive excerpt. I hope you enjoy the sneak peek.

In June of 1978 Grady Ormond, eighteen-year-old son of diplomat Peter Ormond, accompanies his father to his new posting as US Ambassador to Pakistan. Neighboring Iran is on the brink of a civil war, with the monarchy in danger of being overthrown.

Grady will be leaving for New York City in late August to study cinematography and has been warned to keep his homosexual orientation tightly under wraps while on vacation. Repercussions in the predominantly Islamic region could be severe.

On their first night in Karachi, his father hosts a cocktail party to meet the local dignitaries. Grady is introduced to His Highness Prince Kamran Izadi, nephew of the Shah of Iran. Twenty-three-year-old Kamran has recently returned from the UK, where he spent eleven years, first as a student, and then as a financial analyst.

The attraction is immediate—unforeseen and dangerously powerful—but neither one dares to make a move. Odds are so stacked against them it's futile to even entertain a friendship, but they do, and their world tilts precariously.

With his country in turmoil and Grady about to leave for college, Kamran makes a decision that will change their lives forever.

Kamran’s boat was actually a bloody yacht, and I whistled in surprise when I first laid eyes on the sleek white vessel at the Karachi Boat Club. I turned when I heard Kamran chuckling at my astonished reaction.

“Do you have a tendency to downplay everything?”

Still smiling, he answered my question with another. “Did you really think we were going fishing in a tiny pump boat?”

“Yes, I did. You mentioned seafood, and I just assumed we were going out on a stinking trawler.”

For the first time since we’d met, Kam was wearing strictly Western attire: white shorts, navy blue Sperry Top-Sider shoes, a striped blue and white T-shirt, and a jaunty white cap covering his unruly hair. He looked very much at home, like any other young millionaire about to go on board his luxurious yacht for a day of cruising.

“I can hire a tiny sailboat if that’s your preference.”

“Do I look nuts to you? How could I pass up an opportunity to be wined and dined by a prince in such opulent surroundings?”

“I thought you’d enjoy seeing the coast in luxury,” he said, adding, “without my constant companions.”

My eyes widened in shock. “You mean to say they’re going to let you on board without Tweedledee and Tweedledum? However did you manage that?” I whispered conspiratorially.

“With a good bit of trickery.”

“Do tell.”

“I promised them full use of the Land Rover, a nice wad of cash in their pockets, and access to our private box at the racetrack.”

Impressed by his skillful planning, I asked, “Did you get in trouble a lot at school? I didn’t think you had a devious bone in your body.”

“Still waters and all that rot,” he replied nonchalantly.

I wondered what happened between the previous night and that day. It felt as if I was with a different person altogether, not that I didn’t like this confident man standing in front of me, but my curious nature needed answers.

“Did you have some sort of epiphany in the last twelve hours?”

Kamran looked at me, perplexed. “Why do you ask?”

“You seem a little different.”

He shrugged. “Let’s get settled before we have a serious conversation.”

That bad? Now I was definitely intrigued. He guided me up the gangplank with his hand on the small of my back. There were two crew members who greeted us, and neither one looked Iranian or Pakistani. They resembled a couple of hot Spanish guys I’d met back in Barcelona. I hoped they were chosen for their maritime expertise and not their physical attributes. Boats weren’t my forte, and I didn’t think I’d be able to get us back to port if anything were to go amiss. Confirming my suspicions that they weren’t local, Kamran spoke to them in fluent Italian, a language I was familiar with. He told them we’d be the only passengers, and we were ready to go as soon as they pulled up anchor. They acknowledged with brisk nods and went about their business.

Kam led me to a glass-enclosed area of the boat, which literally took my breath away. Plush sofas, onyx-top tables, and a fully stocked bar gleamed enticingly. We could have been in any five-star hotel instead of floating out on the Arabian Sea. Kam headed toward the bar and pulled a pitcher out of the refrigerator tucked underneath one section. It contained the pinkish liquid I was now familiar with, and he poured two drinks into glasses he’d filled with ice. Again, I was taken aback. Was he about to break one of the basic rules of Islam and indulge in an alcoholic beverage? He lifted his glass and waited for me to do the same. Trancelike, I raised my hand and watched as we clinked glasses. I took a sip to confirm what I already suspected. It was definitely laced with vodka, and he put his glass to his lips, all the while staring at me. I fixated on his bobbing Adam’s apple again and wished I had the balls to lean forward and lick him.

Instead I was jarred out of my fantasy by his blunt statement.

“Are you shocked that I’m having a drink?”

“Curious is more like it,” I said. “You were going to tell me what happened last night. Was the Muslim prince abducted by aliens and replaced with this edgier version?”

He licked his lips and grinned. “You think I’m an imposter?”

“I don’t know you well enough to answer that.”

“You’re just seeing my flip side, Grady.”

“Where’s it been all this time?”

He laughed, drained his glass, and brought it down on the wooden counter with a bang. “I was hoping we’d have more time to get to know each other before I revealed my darker side.”
