Charlie Cochet’s Men & Mischief Monthly Author Column…Charlie Chats about Genres. Includes Giveaway.

0M & M 1

FF_Divider_Pink

Hello all! Thank you for joining me for another installment of Men & Mischief. Today I’m chatting about genres. As an author who’s written across many genres, I’m always fascinated by which genres readers are drawn to, or away from, and why. I’ve just started writing contemporary gay romance, my first story a novella called Beware of Geeks Bearing Gifts. My first full length contemporary gay romance, Forgive and Forget, is out April 1st, and is a category romance in Dreamspinner’s Dreamspun Desires line. Whereas many readers are drawn first to contemporary, I admit it’s not my go-to genre to read. I’m very particular about the stories I read that are contemporary. I had to think about why that was.

For me, world building is a huge draw. I love the freedom to weave a new world around my characters, to not be constrained by the rules of our modern human world. That’s not to say my world building won’t be grounded in reality, or include researched facts. It’s probably no surprise that paranormal and fantasy are my favorite genres. I love to get swept away to another world filled with things that go “bump” in the night, unusual characters, myth, and magic. Even in my contemporary I’m drawn toward action and adventure. Horror has never been my thing, though I don’t mind a good romance with elements of horror.

Historical is another genre I very much enjoy. Again, I’m drawn to certain time periods both for reading and writing it. It’s a genre in gay romance often avoided by readers, and again I wonder why that is. Is it just a matter of preference, or are readers put off due to one too many stuffy history lessons in school? Historicals are big sellers in m/f romance, so why can’t the same be said of gay historical romance?

How about you? What’s your favorite genre of gay romance? What draws you to a specific genre, or keeps you away from another?

  2. Um, thats a hard question. I like all genres except horror/thriller. But, I must say any story with a mystery and HEA will have me hooked.

  3. Steampunk, Paranormal and fantasy are my favourite genres. I guess I feel attracted to worlds where the rules of my ordinary reality don't apply. I also love historical romance. There is something fascinating in past times...

  4. Thanks for the great post! I also love genres that include world building. To pick just one - I would go with historical/paranormal (such as Whyborne & Griffin series). I also love fantasy, sci-fi, paranormal, dystopian, historical...and I do read a fair amount of contemporary, but those I am choosier about.

  5. I have to admit to M/M Science Fiction Romance being my go to for a good read but M/M Paranormal Romance comes a very close second.

  6. Mostly read contemporary, though I do like a good historical (but oddly they have to be set before ww2 at the latest!)
I am not a hughe paranormal fan - will read if it is a slight twist on the norm but full on faeries, demon, incubi etc and settings not of this world I do struggle to get my head around.
Also, musicians are not a big draw but do enjoy trans and drag stories. Excessive cruelty is a big turn off but can usually deal if it is set post apocalyptic ( though I probably wouldnt leap to read!)

  7. Thank you for the post. I love seeing world and character building in the stories I pick up. I'm really into mpreg (sci-fi/fantasy) stories and mystery/suspense.

  9. I would read pretty much any subgenres, but I think my favorites might be Contemporary and Historical Romance, with a little action/suspense thrown in. I don't mind humour or a darker tone.
I'm not so much into SciFi or the usual "I'm an alpha were-something and I claim you as my mate/insta-lust/insta-love" PNR, but like to read some that have more to it: I LOVE the THIRDS series, with this incredibly innovative world, action and humour to add depth to the romance storyline ;-)
I may be too old to connect with NA and coming of age stories. I'm kind of fed up with all the teenage angst and first love becoming the HEA... Give me a thirtyish/fortyish man with some past and expectations for the future he created for himself!
Thanks for the post and the comments it initiated. And thanks for the chance at the giveaway.

  11. I'll read any genre & don't really avoid any. I read mostly contemporary because that's what's most available & what I can most identify with. If the story is engaging, I'm happy, doesn't matter what the setting - I'm not fussy. legacylandlisa(at)gmail(dot)com

  12. I agree with Elle! Give me the older fortyish man with a great story. I read contemporary or historical with a military/cop story line and I'm happy!

  15. I enjoy most, the only one that I tend to shy away from is historical unless it's part of an alternate universe or steampunk-like. I also ration really angst filled stories because I read to relax mostly and too much angst causes me to stress when I need to be relaxing.

  16. Historical is one of my fav because I remember reading historical mf when I was a kid and was the genre that lure me the most. I also like mystery, contemporary, fantasy.

  19. I think I have no particulars in M/M romance, I like contemporary, historical, paranormal, urban fantasy, suspense... Well, perhaps not so much on horror and hard core BDSM. But other than that, I'm quite open. :)

  22. I love contemporary most. After that I would say I like the urban fantasies like THIRDS. I avoid historical in all its forms, simply because I am not a big fan of history. I am ashamed to say other time periods make me feel twitchy.

  23. I love the picture - it oozes mischief and fun. I love all sorts of genres within the MM realm. I can switch from a serious mystery involving govt security employees to an historical comedy and then over to a life-on-the-line shifter adventure. Oh, I can sum it up in one sentence: It must end in smexy committed guys getting their HEA!

  24. My favourite genres are Paranormal & fantasy.

  25. Romantic comedy is my favorite genre. I tend to steer clear of hardcore BDSM and most polyamorous books. Thanks for the giveaway!

  26. I only read historicals when they're m/m, oddly enough. I like a good contemporary with themes about music, sports, food, or art, and a touch of humor never hurts!

  27. What I like: historical, paranormal and fantasy, contemporary and of course HEA :D

What I dislike: instant love, friends who find out they love each other, too much sex scene, BDSM and too much "sugar".

  28. For me, it's paranormal all the way, whether gay or heterosexual romance. Especially when it comes to M/M, the paranormal world is far more accepting and adaptable, IMO. I'm not a fan of contemporary, because who wants to escape to anything remotely resembling real life? And real life rarely features billionaire biker rock-star step-brothers who are barely old enough to drink legally, lol. Gimme a guy, or two, who can literally claw me to pieces any day; I'd love to hear them purr!
