The Beautiful People
Once upon a time I had an addiction to fashion magazines. The glossy pages full of clothes I would never wear, jewelry I could never afford, makeup tips I could never follow…I didn’t care. I was just reading for the pictures. Fashion photography is a celebration of texture and shape and color unlike any other art form. Whenever the neighbors’ kids would do magazine selling fundraisers, I’d feel like it was Christmas.
Making Connor, the main character of Blueberry Boys, a photographer was integral to his characterization—how he looked at the world, where he found beauty. Making him a fashion photographer in particular was my nod to the photos I love so much, and the joy they’ve given me over the years.
Nowadays, I seldom buy magazines—I follow fashion and editorial photographers on Instagram instead, where I can see their gorgeous work right from my phone. In celebration of Blueberry Boys, and my fashion photography obsession, I thought it might be fun to share some of my very favorites.
Ruven Afanador, based out of New York, has been a photographer as long as I have been alive. I still have a twelve-year-old copy of InStyle magazine tucked away on a book shelf because I was so taken by the sense of motion and joy in an editorial spread of his that I couldn’t bear to recycle it. On his Instagram, he often shares pullbacks—photographs of his sets as well as the finished images. Check them out here: https://www.instagram.com/ruvenafanador/
Darren Black, based out of London, has a hard, edgy aesthetic. His work is breathtaking, bold, and sexy as hell. I’ve lost hours browsing his portfolios on his website to get my photography fix. You can see it here: http://darrenblackphotography.com/
JoeyL, based out of New York, has an emotive, journalistic style, and his commercial work is ubiquitous—if you’ve seen a poster for the Twilight movies, you’ve seen Joey’s work. While his commercial work is gorgeous, his documentary portraits are in a league of their own. You can see his work here: http://www.joeyl.com/

Connor Graham is a city boy—a celebrated fashion photographer in New York. When his uncle’s death drags him back to the family blueberry farm, all he wants to do is sell it as quickly as he can. Until he meets his uncle’s tenant farmer.
Jed Jones, shy and stammering, devout and dedicated, has always yearned for land of his own and a man to share it with. Kept in the closet by his church, family, and disastrous first love, he longs to be accepted for who he is. But now, with his farm and his future in Connor’s careless hands, he stands to lose even the little he has.
Neither man expects the connection between them. Jed sees Connor—appreciates his art and passion like no one else in this godforsaken town ever has. Connor hears Jed—looks past his stutter to listen to the man inside. The time they share is idyllic, but with the farm sale pending, even their sanctuary is a source of tension. As work, family, and their town’s old-fashioned attitudes pull them apart, they must find a way to reconcile commitments to their careers and to each other.

Author of over a dozen novels, novellas, and short stories, Vanessa North delights in giving happy-ever-afters to characters who don’t think they deserve them. Relentless curiosity led her to take up knitting and run a few marathons “just to see if she could.” She started writing for the same reason. Her very patient husband pretends not to notice when her hobbies take over the house. Living and writing in Northwest Georgia, she finds her attempts to keep a quiet home are frequently thwarted by twin boy-children and a very, very large dog.
