Fairy Tales, Research, and the Amazing Penis
Hi! I’m so excited to be back at Sinfully just in time for the holidays! I’m Tara Lain. I write the Beautiful Boys of Romance and today I’m celebrating the release of DRIVEN SNOW, my new contemporary fantasy romance. Like all of my Pennymaker Tales, Driven Snow is based on a fairy tale theme. As you can guess, in this case the fairy tale is Snow White. Unlike a lot of fairy tales, Snow White has a huge amount of story including murder attempts on more than one person by various villains, poison, magic mirrors, 7 famous dwarves, a huntsman, and more. Of course, there’s also a handsome prince.
I’ve tried to make all these details relevant in a contemporary world without losing the threads that make Snow White what it is – and that took a ton of research. Like a lot of authors, I know if the FBI investigated my Google search history they’d be more than suspicious! For this book, I had to delve into poisons that could simulate death, but be invisible in the system shortly after they were administered. I found one and you’ll see it in the book. I also had to investigate how to get out of a car underwater. Do you know there are a bunch of videos showing experiments in escaping from a submerged vehicle? I watched a lot of them, and I have to admit, some were not successful. Fortunately, the escapees had an oxygen tank handy.
Riley Prince, one of my heroes, is a football quarterback and I’ve done a lot of research into football already, so I drew on that knowledge. Not so for chess. I had to search famous chess matches as well as the simple basics of chess notations so I could create a hero who was a chess champion. He’s also a physics student. I’m not sure why I keep creating heroes who are physicists (it requires mountains of research), but I guess physics is sexy! LOL.
Okay, so here’s the funny part! I did tons of research, but missed a very critical piece of information. A few days ago, I received an email from Alan Arthur who so kindly reviewed Driven Snow for Sinfully. He told me he loved the book! (Happy dance.) But he added this delightful and highly informative paragraph –
“At one point in the book, in the very first sex scene between Snow and Riley, you use this little metaphor that I've seen in other gay romances. It's just the kind of silly thing that drives me just a tiny bit crazy because it's a nice literary device, but factually incorrect. You describe Riley's penis as "smooth skin over the hard muscle beneath". Forgive me for being presumptuous, but you have a little anatomical problem with your description - there is no muscle in a penis. None whatsoever. The shaft of the penis is comprised of the two Corpora Cavernosum and the smaller Corpus Spongiosum, tubes running the length of the penis that fill up with blood, under great pressure, which is what causes an erection. No muscles, however, hard of otherwise. There are some muscles inside the body that allow the man to move the penis, internally, and other muscles that cause ejaculation, but none in the penis itself.”
Wow! I loved this. I read it to my husband who had no idea it was true. LOL. But it goes to show how we research our heads off and then assume we know something absolutely critical – and don’t check it. And our fabulous editors don’t check it. How many times have you read something about muscle in a penis? Lots I’ll bet. Me too. Never again will my books repeat this error! My sincerest thanks to Alan – for reading my book and for this great piece of information that I’ll bet is news to many – even men who have them! Now doesn’t that make you an even greater appreciator of the amazing penis? I promise to happily do more research on the subject in the future!
Contest: The Pennymaker Tales are all stand alone books with just one continuing character (Mr. Pennymaker) so they can be read in any order. The first Pennymaker Tale is Sinders and Ash. I’ll give away 2 copies of Sinders and Ash to two winners. (If you’ve already read it, we’ll work something out, so enter anyway!)

A Pennymaker Tale
Young Snowden “Snow” Reynaldi is brilliant, beautiful, and alone. Though he’s shy, weird, and tolerated by the NorCal University students because he’s a renowned whiz at chess and helps put the school on the map, that doesn’t keep him from dreaming of the object of his desires: Riley Prince, championship quarterback.
When Riley needs a physics tutor, Snow jumps at the chance, and their relationship heats up—but Riley has to come out of the jock closet to get anywhere. Meanwhile, Snow’s one true friend and mentor, Professor Kingsley, marries a woman who secretly wants the chess tournament glory and money for herself. Soon after, the professor collapses and Snow finds himself underwater—literally. In a car!
Seven frat brothers from Grimm College rescue Snow just in time for his life to get even worse, and Snow discovers the one relationship he always wanted slipping away. With evil looming at every turn, Snow must survive if only to prove he’s the fairest of them all and regain the trust of his handsome prince.

Riley walked him backward until his calves hit the edge of the couch, and he fell onto soft cushions with Riley planted on him from knees to chest, his big rod hitting Snow somewhere around the thighs. The best possible topping.
Snow opened his legs and grabbed the protuberance between them, then rubbed them together in his best caterpillar imitation.
“Jesus, yes. Where did you learn to do that?”
“Made it up.”
“Genius.” He thrust into Snow’s tight hold. “What do you want? Anything. I’ll give it to you.”
“No, it’s your turn. You tell me what to do. Then you’ll have to show me how. But I’ll do it. I love vanilla. Want me to try to give you a blowjob? That’s why I was sneaking around.”
Still humping Snow’s legs, Riley whispered, “That sounds good, but you know what I really want?”
“I want you to fuck me.”
“What? Oh God.”
“Have you ever fucked a guy?”
“Jesus, Riley, I hadn’t been kissed until you did it. When would I have gotten around to fucking?”
“Do you want to?”
His cock throbbed so hard it neared pain. “I want to do anything to you.”
“It’ll come naturally.” He rolled off Snow onto the floor, grabbed the huge bottle of lube he’d dropped earlier, and pumped some into his hands. “Let me grease up that lovely cock.” His breath came fast. He slipped Snow’s elastic down and grabbed his penis. “So beautiful.” He stroked the cool gel over it.
“D-don’t I need a condom?”
“You’re a virgin, and I haven’t had sex without a condom in years.” He shrugged. “I barely have sex, since I don’t really get turned on by girls, and I have to go a long way away to find a guy who doesn’t know me, so mostly I use my hand.” He glanced at it. “No STDs. Plus, I’ve been tested.”
Snow swallowed and nodded. The discussion made this whole thing very real.
Riley stroked more lube on Snow’s penis.
“Oh God, don’t do much of that, or I’ll never do anything else.”
“I want you in me so bad.” He pushed onto his hands and knees and started shoving lube into his butt.
Snow swallowed. He might be terrified, but his cock knew right where it wanted to be.
Riley peered over his shoulder, the lubing still underway. “You understand the principle of fucking, right?”
“Uh, I believe so.”
Riley pointed at Snow’s now very erect penis with the lube bottle, then squeezed more into his hand. “You put that in here.” He waved at his ass.
“Yes, I understand.” The last word came out as a squeak. Suddenly that idea sounded so far beyond good he bobbed up on his knees and ripped the pajama bottoms down to the floor, then sat back and pulled them off.
Riley grinned. “I like your enthusiasm.”
