A Word from K.A. Merikan
We haven’t planned to write a novel about two stepbrothers. Jed and Ryder were created as side characters for Guns n’ Boys: Swamp Blood, but they took a life of their own as we wrote that book. From their first appearance together, it was clear how protective of one another they are, and we started sensing an undercurrent of jealousy soon afterward. Even before we finished Swamp Blood, we had Jed and Ryder’s backstory figured out. While they share no blood and didn’t grow up together early on, they became family when their respective parents got married
At the beginning of One Step Too Close, Jed and Ryder have been secretly in love with each other for a very long time, but they both kept quiet about it, and so it was only an unspoken longing that was to never be satisfied. Ryder, who is bisexual, at least has a safe outlet for his sexual feelings, whereas Jed, who is gay, doesn’t feel pursuing men is a safe option. The motorcycle club is the only family he knows, and he is too afraid to risk losing all his friends--most of all, losing Ryder--for the sake of a few flings.
Falling in love with a family member, even one that isn’t related to you is taboo because the love we generally expect from relatives isn’t romantic love (excluding married couples, obviously) and because in many cases the issue of consent could be blurry due to family dynamics. But Jed and Ryder’s love is selfless, and they are ready to sacrifice a lot for one another without asking for anything in return. It is only by sheer luck that their secrets come out in the open, but even then, being in a relationship with someone who used to be a brother is not easy.
At the end of the day, if two people want to be together despite taboos and rules, their bond only becomes tighter. I was finishing the epilogue very content, because the kind of unbreakable love that Jed and Ryder share is exactly what I want to read about in a romance book. The characters don’t have to be perfect, their moral choices might be questionable, as long as they can redeem themselves through love. I think that’s what One Step Too Close is really about.

K. A. Merikan is the pen name for Kat and Agnes Merikan, a team of writers, who are mistaken for sisters with surprising regularity. Kat’s the mean sergeant and survival specialist of the duo, never hesitating to kick Agnes’s ass when she’s slacking off. Her memory works like an easy-access catalogue, which allows her to keep up with both book details and social media. Also works as the emergency GPS. Agnes is the Merikan nitpicker, usually found busy with formatting and research. Her attention tends to be scattered, and despite pushing thirty, she needs to apply makeup to buy alcohol. Self-proclaimed queen of the roads.
They love the weird and wonderful, stepping out of the box, and bending stereotypes both in life and books. When you pick up a Merikan book, there’s one thing you can be sure of - it will be full of surprises. e-mail: firstname.lastname@example.org
