The only way to stay alive is to listen when the dead speak…

Sheriff Laine Stenley thinks he might just be losing his mind. Ever since he'd encountered the spirit of his friend's deceased mother, strange things have been happening. His sheriff's tin star keeps popping off, his Stetson tends to fly off his head at the most inconvenient times—and then there are the subtle caresses that remind him of a lover's touch… Something Laine has been without for years—since the violent murder of his partner—and figures to be without well into the future if he wants to retain his position as the sheriff in the small town of McKinton, Texas. Laine doesn't want to risk his career or his heart ever again, but he may not have a choice, not if he wants to stay alive.

A man who listens to spirits, Severo has come to McKinton to deliver a message of danger. One look at the sexy sheriff and Severo finds himself in a different sort of danger. He's not ready to find a man who can claim him heart, soul, and body, but ready or not, the attraction that simmers between them is undeniable—and irresistible.

Together, they will race against time, because something evil is coming to McKinton. Severo and Laine must learn to trust each other—and themselves— and listen when the dead speak.

Reader Advisory: This book is best read in sequence as part of a series but can be read as a stand alone.

Liza’s Review

Beware of what follows you back from the dead.

In this installment of the Southern Spirits series we catch up with Rick from book 2. Rick had been tortured by a serial killer who had been after Laine at the time, and after his attack had died twice in hospital. Now a year later he is haunted, by a spirit who is making his life a living hell. The last thing he wants or needs is a lover. In fact he is looking to die - anything will do, a gun, pills, booze. After a solid year of hell, he is ready to give up. Fortunately the spirits haven't given up on him.

Chris - gorgeous, big muscled, well pierced, truck driver Chris, finds Rick on the side of the road with a broken down car after an intervention has Rick on the road to McKinton. Although Chris had always thought his mum was joshing when she said when he found love it would hit him over the head, the moment he saw Rick, Chris knew his mother was right. But Chris was going to have a hard road getting Rick to believe he was nothing more than a grotesque monster. Between his scars and the evil presence he felt inside of him, Rick was on the road to insanity if he didn't get some help soon.

My goodness, this story had some really poignant moments. My heart literally cried for Rick - bad enough to be tortured but to be literally possessed as well...the agony that must have been. And Chris was so amazing, so strong and yet so very kind - determined not to let Rick go through his suffering on his own anymore. This story had good ghosts and bad ghosts, which I suppose is natural given that there are good and bad people, but bad ghosts are what made the Exorcist famous - they are really hard to get rid of.

If you have read the other books then you know Rick had some history with Matt before the attack and was rather cruel to him. Matt got the love of his life in book 3, so we don't need to feel sorry for him. The other men, Laine and Severo and Zack and Brandon were also in this book, as well as our friendly ghost Connor and the two ladies. The only thing I was sorry about was that we didn't get to meet Chris' mom - I think that would have been pretty amazing.

I have fallen in love with this series - the ghosts give an added dimension to an otherwise beautiful love story and that is where I think Ms. Bradford excels. Her sexy scenes are always hot, but the love is something so pure, so wonderful and so intense it makes my heart ache. Another one to add to my favorites pile.

Favorite Line: Chris could put more pressure on a suck than a pit bull clamping on a bone.
