When alpha shifter Mikael Volokov is called to witness a challenge, he learns the evil and power-hungry Anton Gregor will stop at nothing to attain victory. Knowing he will need alliances to keep his pack together, Mikael requests a congress with the nearby Evergreen pack and meets Denton Arguson, Evergreen alpha, to ask for his help. Fate has a strange twist for both of them, though, and Mikael and Denton soon realize they’re destined mates.
Denton resists the pull between them—he has his own pack and his own responsibilities. But Mikael isn't willing to give up. The Mother has promised Mikael his mate, told him he must fight for him, and that only together can they defeat the coming darkness. When Anton casts his sights on Denton's pack, attacks and sabotage follow, pulling Denton and Mikael together to defeat a common enemy. But Anton’s threats sow seeds of destruction enough to break any bond, and the mates’ determination to challenge the darkness may be their only saving grace

Liza’s Review

Mikael is alpha of the Yellowstone pack. After watching a challenge between two other alphas he is only able to save the wife and two sons of the loser in the fight. The victor, Anton is a cruel wolf and while Mikael wonders what will happen to Gregor's pack members, under the shifter laws he can do nothing for them. He struggles with helping Anna and her two boys and prays that the love of his family, his pack, will be enough for her.

There were a lot of things he could do as an alpha, but healing a broken and longing heart was not one of them.

In this world wolf packs usually don't have anything to do with other packs, but because Mikael's pack is so small and the threat from Anton is a grave one, he asks for a meeting with the alpha of the Evergreen pack. Unfortunately, or not depending on how you look at it, the alpha of the Evergreen pack, Denton, is Mikael's mate. Neither men are prepared to give up control of their pack and Denton rejects Mikael completely, only allowing for an agreement of support for the pack if it was needed.

Maybe fated mates are for when fate must step in.

I adored Catherine, I thought she was someone I would love to have as a friend. She was strong and confident, yet she gave Mikael some wonderful advice and seemed really caring as well. The Mother (with a capital M as opposed to Mikael's mother) was another concept I really enjoyed. It reminded me of pagan beliefs and when life was a lot simpler. I also really liked the way this story tied into real life like with the re-introduction of wolves into the Yellowstone area. The tagging idea was funny too.

This book has become one of my favorites even if just for the theme that love, and good, do triumph over evil, no matter how bad that evil stinks. These two men never lost sight of who they were as individuals, yet as a couple they were magnificent. I just hope this is a series, because there are a couple of others in the pack I would love to see with mates - hint, hint.
