Forbes Mates: Book One
Finley Cooper is tired of waiting for his destined mate to be ready to claim him. In deference to human laws, he’s already agreed to wait until he’s eighteen. But now his birthday has come and gone—and his mate has a new set of excuses. Finley doesn’t understand it any more than his wolf does, and he’s beginning to wonder if fate made a mistake.
Tanner Pearce wants nothing more than to claim his mate, but he worries that Finley is too young. Tanner will never forget what happened when his best friend mated at Finley’s age, only to have that mate end up feeling trapped and breaking their bond. While rare, it can happen, and the fallout Tanner witnessed as his best friend tried to deal with the break has haunted him for years.
When Finley finally has enough, he threatens to find someone who will claim him if Tanner doesn’t, and Tanner realizes he needs to come to terms with his fears or risk losing his mate forever.
Tanner has a mate, Finley. Unfortunately Finlay is only eighteen and shifter law says he has to be over the age of 21 before he can be claimed. Tanner, who is 24 understands the waiting but unfortunately Finley and his parents don't. Consequently Finley's parents let the young man go out and do whatever he wants, which seems to be anything that drives Tanner insane - like having to pull him out of a gay club.
Finlay thought he understood before he was eighteen - after all neither one of the shifters wanted to be in a human jail. But since he had turned eighteen all he could think was that Tanner didn't want him and was just making excuses to him. In this shifter story it is possible for one mate to sever a newly started bond and take up with someone new, and that is just what Finlay thinks he should do. In his head its simple - if Tanner won't claim him, then maybe he should let someone else do it.
I can't say much more because the whole book is concerned about Finlay and Tanner and their relationship - there are no other outside story lines. Finlay does try to be with someone else and it would be up to your personal definition of cheating as to whether you think he did. I like the idea when Finlay thought Tanner was hurting that his wolf took over...yes you are going to have to read more to find out what happens.
Grace Duncan is known for her details but I felt in this story it did make for a slow book. The train trips, the plane trips, the whole thing seemed to drag on just a bit and while it was interesting taking wolf concepts and putting them in a human context, this wasn't the most exciting of stories. But then I was reminded of the title again, and that is what this book is about - the devotion two men can have for each other and what they will do when they find the one they are fated to be with.
