A powerful Alpha wolf shifter and a strong-willed human overcome traditions ingrained over generations and uncover long-buried secrets to fulfill their destiny as true mates.
Regarded as the strongest wolf shifter in generations, Alpha Zev Hassick is surprised and confused by his attraction to his best friend. His very human, very male best friend. A male shifter has to mate with a female shifter to keep his humanity, so shifters can’t be gay. Yet, everything inside Zev tells him Jonah is his true mate.
Maintaining a relationship with the man he has loved since childhood isn’t easy for Jonah Marvel, but he won’t let distance or Zev’s odd family get in their way. When unexplained ailments begin to plague Jonah, he needs to save his own life and sanity in order to have a future with Zev.
Zev and Jonah know they’re destined for each other, but they must overcome traditions ingrained over generations and long-buried secrets to fulfill their destiny.
Zev has a problem. He's an Alpha wolf and he’s been taught since birth that he needs to mate with a female wolf shifter so that he doesn't lose his humanity. Unfortunately, the only person he is interested in is his true mate, a human male who has been away from home for twelve years.
I loved how the author showed how these two met - Jonah and Zev. Zev has been fascinated with Jonah since the boy was a baby and that was so cute. The "pup" aspect was gorgeous and really helped when they both got older. And yes, they did grow older and become friends - good friends and by the time Zev has realized the truth - that Jonah is his mate - Jonah is off to college, and then medical school. That was really hard, on both of them, for so many different reasons.
There is so much in this book - in one respects a typical shifter book in the true mate trope, but one with a lot more depth and an interesting twist. Zev not only has to overcome the fact that he believed he couldn't tie with a male but there are a lot of things about Jonah that just don't add up.
Jonah's father was a bit stupid really, but then he didn't know the mess he was walking into when he was trying to help Jonah. Lori and Toby were excellent secondary characters - it was quite neat seeing them grow up at the same time as Zev and Jonah...and yep, I'm not giving the story line away but I am glad those two are happy as well.
I guess you could say this story is a slow burn - after all it takes a lifetime for these two men to finally get together. But you already know (or hope at least) what that outcome is going to be, even if the reader is never quite sure how things are going to work out. I mean, Zev and Jonah's pairing had never been seen in this shifter world before.
The story about Jonas's mother was sad, and I'm glad that justice was finally done for her. Unfortunately the prejudices in this book, while different to what we have in day to day life, are just as heartbreaking when shown in fiction. Cardeno C is a powerful writer and this is one of her best.
