A sensitive wolf shifter and a vicious vampire challenge history, greed, and the very fabric of their beings in order to stay together until forever comes. Plagued by pain and weakness all his life, Ethan Abbatt is a wolf shifter who can’t shift. Hoping to find an honorable death by joining his pack mates in a vampire attack, Ethan instead learns two things: draining his blood releases his pain and his wolf, and he has a true mate - a vampire named Miguel.
Over four centuries old, strong, powerful, and vicious, Miguel Rodriguez walks through life as a shadow, without happiness or affection. When a young shifter tells Miguel they’re true mates, destined to be together, Miguel sends him away. But Ethan is persistent and being together comes so naturally that Miguel can’t resist for long. The challenge is keeping themselves alive so they can stay by each other’s side until forever comes.
Ethan is an unusual wolf shifter - he can't shift and he always feels like there is something wrong with him. Because of the way he feels, and his lack of shifting thing, he is a virtual outcast in his pack, so when he gets the chance to go and do some damage to some vampires, he goes along hoping that maybe he will get killed. But instead of being killed, he finds Miguel, a vampire...and yeah, a series of events lead to his first shift.
This book is told from Ethan's point of view and he is quite funny, especially when he couldn't get Miguel out of his head.
I reckoned he was about to tell me that dog wouldn’t hunt so I tried to look as serious and strong as possible. Have you ever tried to look strong? Turned out it wasn't such an easy feat to accomplish.
This book has the same shifter ideals as "Wake Me Up Inside" where a male shifter has to tie with a female to retain his humanity. Ethan never thought he would be able to ever have a mate because he never shifted - he was far too human...and now you might see the connection with Miguel. Or not. Keep reading. Miguel believes that Ethan would be poisonous to him because shifter blood is poisonous to vampires, so of course they can't be mates.
"You just said 'diddle'. Hell, you just said you don't diddle. You seem to have no idea how dangerous it is for you here. You seem to have no idea how dangerous I am wolf. I am nobody's home."
Mates are two halves of the same whole, and the same can be said for Ethan and Miguel, no matter how different they may be from each other. But there are other things that need to be considered - Miguel's purpose for being in Ethan's town, Ethan's pack, Miguel's coven, and so much more. I loved Chrissy, I thought she was amazing although I didn't like Ralph at all - with good reason, it turns out. It's at the end of the book you understand why Miguel and Ethan show up in the first story.
Another great book and for me it was made better by the fact that these two men were so different, not just in species or in looks, but in the way they interacted with each other, that they did complement each other perfectly. This is a great read and I highly recommend it...you don't need to, but read book one first.
