Joining Sex and Spirituality in Danny’s Dragon
Years ago in a bookstore, I happened across a series of erotic romances by Jade Lee. Her White Tigress series, set in turn of the century Shanghai, used the erotic practices of the Taoist path to achieve enlightenment. I got hooked on the series, the beautiful language, the compelling characters. Well, Jade’s books had a huge influence on my own writing. At the time, I hadn’t begun writing M/M romance yet. I was still writing M/F romances and had just written Kiss of the Werewolves (M/F/M, Paranormal) which ended up at Ellora’s Cave.
However, around that time, I had begun to read some M/M to review for the author and that genre worked on my mind. I grew up with a gay father and really felt that writing this genre would be so alien in spite of having grown up around gay men. Then, as if a switch had been flicked, all of a sudden, I wanted to try my hand. The heroine of Kiss of the Werewolves, Meg, has a best friend, Danny Wong. The two of them grew up together in Boston’s Chinatown and Meg’s grandfather had taught them both Tai Chi in the martial arts studio he ran next to his grocery. Voilà! Danny Wong was a perfect character to pen my first M/M romance. He was handsome, sweet, shy, meditative and very caring. I needed to pair him with a guy who was also good in his own way and hot, but needed the kind of calm warmth Danny could give to temper his wildness. Since the Taoist principles work with the complementary forces of yin and yang, then Danny’s yin character would go perfectly with Dave’s yang personality. The story practically wrote itself.
I then was faced with the fun and interesting challenge of interpreting the erotic Taoist practices of the Tigress and Dragon (woman and man) to two men (Dragons). After a little reading and writing, I found that what I really needed to do was simply “convert” the practices to two men who each possessed a “dragon” (the Taoist term for the penis.” The positions themselves could remain the same, performed with two men instead of a man and woman. For example, “Playing the Jade Flute,” can just as easily be performed on a man by a man as by a woman. As can “Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon.”
As you can see by the names of the positions, the language I use in Danny’s Dragon, referring to the cock as the dragon in many instances and other such expressions. I really wanted to emphasize the uplifting and potentially life-changing effect of sexuality approached this way, with the intention of raising the partners’ energy from the lower parts of the body to the mind so that they could experience joy of being and not just lust.
Later, when I expanded on this theme in my M/M romance White Tigers series set in Tokyo, I commissioned an artist to make sketches of a couple of the positions. I wanted this loving approach to help forge the foundation for a lasting bond between the two heroes of the story. I hope that if you read Danny’s Dragon you will enjoy this way of presenting an erotic relationship.
