A Right and Wrong Story
Workaholic Nate Erickson is a successful real estate developer who thrives on long hours and stress. When a Los Angeles project prompts him to relocate to Santa Monica, he welcomes the change of scenery. Nate has always considered romantic entanglements trouble, but his sexy next-door neighbor isn’t easy to ignore. Which makes no sense, because Nate is straight… or so he’s always thought.
Alex Reyes is a retired professional soccer player turned West Hollywood business owner with an insatiable lust for life. He loves his family, friends, and work. But there’s one life challenge left to accomplish: coming out publicly. Respect for traditional Latino values has kept him in the closet, but Alex begins to think he and his new neighbor might help one another combat their fears. As Alex and Nate forge a strong friendship, they soon realize facing their personal demons will take more courage than either man bargained for. The reward is immeasurable… if the timing is right.
Book three in the Right and Wrong series, and this time it's Michael's Latino ex soccer buddy, Alex's turn to find the right man for him, only this time we actually get the story told from the POV of the newest cast member Nate, a friend of Jack's, who made an appearance in The Wrong Man.
Alex has always been an interesting background character in the books and I've been dying to see him fleshed out more. Now he's finally got his own story, I've got to say he's turned out to be one of my most favourite characters from the series. In fact he and Nate have pushed themselves into my 'top most loved Lane Hayes couples' list.
I adored the connection she forged between recently divorced, perfectionist Nate, and the more outgoing, free spirited sporty Alex; who from their first meeting in the apartment buildings elevator, totally knocked the seemingly straight workaholic for six. Nate is not an impulsive man but something about his gorgeous, vibrant new landlord and neighbour makes him lose his tightly reined in inhibitions. This charismatic, sexy man with a smile that slays him, brings out feelings in Nate that he's pushed far back. Having settled instead for a life and marriage of professional convenience, instead of allowing himself to follow his true Inclination.
The chemistry between him and Alex was perfection, even when they were just in friendship mode, but as the attraction spilled over into more than that and they move on to a fuck buddies style relationship, the sexual tension pulsated! I'm a ST whore and Lane Hayes never lets me down on that score, giving me the tummy flips on more than one occasion. Especially when the gorgeous Alex got Nate all of a dither, with his hot, take charge, hands on style of flirting....DAYUM!... there were some sexy, passionate stand offs between those two! Watching Nate claim, and begin to own, his true sexuality through those heated encounters was gorgeous.
"I wanted to be with Alex. I wanted to be near him. The rush of hearing his laughter and watching him move was intoxicating. He was a drug to me. I couldn't get enough."
Both men have conflicted pasts, present day struggles and personal hang ups to contend with, and they all come to light over the course of the book. For Nate, it’s a sad family history and an on going shaky relationship with Julie, a friend who's past with him is complicated to say the least. While Alex’s struggles lie with his tunnel visioned, disapproving Latino father's cultural non-acceptance of his sexuality and life choices concerning his now ex sports career; a huge part of why he's still loath to out himself publicly; even though his family and close friends know he's gay.
I sooo enjoyed this book. The writing was smart, attention grabbing and polished; giving Nate a really engaging voice and persona… the romantic elements hit all right buttons and the sexual push and pull sizzled…the drama was nicely balanced… and Nate and Alex were utterly enticing and lovable as a couple...plus we got to see our other fave guys from the previous books: Michael and Luke, and Jake, Bran and of course the cutie doggie with the best name ever, "Macky" ( okay... "Mack"... but he did get called that once in book two!!! LOL)
The slight fly in the ointment for me was the Julie situation...there were aspects of her part in the story that didn't quite work for me. Too much of a spoiler to explain why but no doubt you'll come to your own conclusions when you read the book...it's all personal. Plus because the nature of her past with Nate isn't always fully explained to begin with, I sometimes found myself getting a bit confused; at one stage I actually wondered if I'd forgotten something important from the previous book and it did throw me for a minute or two, but it all became clear as the story progressed.
All that aside, I still finished it with a huge satisfied smile at its lovely HEA. I love Lane, she's one of my go to authors, so now it's just the anticipated wait for her next story to arrive, and another case of "Hands off its mine!" when it does. Hopefully soon!
