SWAT officer Cole can handle just about anything, until he rescues Brett—a man who makes him question all he’s ever believed about love.
As a member of the Las Vegas Police Department’s SWAT team, Cole has seen his fair share of danger, but he’s never taken a chance on love. He’s willing to have some fun when the mood strikes him, but he’s married to the job. Called in on a hostage situation, Cole is prepared for anything and everything… Except for the brave and beautiful Brett.
Brett has been burned before, most recently by Officer Parker McLean. He’s hoping to settle down in Vegas, perhaps find someone he can build a life with. The last thing Brett’s looking for is another man in uniform, but when he meets Cole, there’s an attraction that can’t be denied. He doesn’t expect to fall for the chiseled alpha, though.
What begins as nothing more than two people experiencing a great night together spirals into something far deeper. But will Brett be able to handle the stress that comes with having a lover who constantly puts his life in jeopardy? And can Cole risk his heart on an everyday hero, or will the job he knows so well remain his top priority?
Cole has a good life. He loves his job on the SWAT team, he has a fuck buddy, Steve who understands his needs and if he's occasionally plagued with memories from his time as a Ranger, then nobody else knows about it. He's not looking for love, and in fact constantly avoids it.
Brett on the other hand is looking for the one special person he can spend his life with. He thought he had found that with Parker, but it seems Parker preferred to keep things light and easy. But Brett moved to Los Vegas anyway, and hoped he'd find what he was looking for in a new city, with a new life.
A hostage situation brought Cole and Brett together - Brett being the hostage of course. Brett realized that Cole could be considered a hero, but he wasn't looking for someone dangerous. And while Cole didn't understand why he felt protective about the smaller man, he wasn't averse to getting his end away. So he did. But why he went back to see Brett the next day, was a mystery to Cole.
I loved how Brett stood up for himself and walked away when he felt he had to. I understood why Cole had his problems, but he could have at least promised to stay monogamous, and he didn't. I'm not sure I liked the way they got back together - I think Cole had a lot of explaining to do and although Ms. Knight shared those thoughts with the reader, they would have made more impact if Cole had shared them with Brett.
Overall I really loved this book. I didn't like that that the first scene was Cole being intimate with Steve, but I can see why the author wrote it that way - I'm just a bit of a prude and prefer my MCs not have on page sex with someone else. In defense, Cole hadn't even met Brett yet. But Ms. Knight's writing drew me in like it always did and I was really pleased with the realistic HEA Cole and Brett found with each other.
