A murderer haunts the city, turning the unwary to stone. Between hunting this evil and corralling new arrivals, Flax struggles to guard both his life and his heart.

Quinn and Valerian have come through the trials of facing an undead lich queen and the perils of falling in love. Now they work to restore AURA to its previous strength and efficiency while navigating their new life with each other. Fortunately, they’re not in this alone.

Kai Hiltas has taken over as the head of the research department at AURA and has become everyone’s favourite workaholic, everyone except his lover Tenzin, who has had enough of his late nights and broken promises. As Kai tries to salvage his relationship, he finds a teacher for Quinn, who also happens to be one of Valerian’s new officers, Flax Wolfheart, a sexy elf with trouble written all over him.

Flax has motives beyond simply teaching Quinn to control his magic. He’s trying to recover from his own losses and failures, but he has a plan. The two newest elvish crossovers, Ash and Sage, are sizzling hot and might even like him. With them as backup as he tracks a deadly stone mage and figures out how to teach Quinn, Flax sees his chance to impress Val and snag a place by his captain’s side. On the hunt for both danger and redemption, Flax’s pursuit leads him ultimately down trails he never expected.

Liza’s Review

This book is the sequel to Quinn's Gambit, book one in the series. It follows on with Quinn's story and his relationship with Valerian, as well as introducing new characters like Flax Wolfheart. Quinn is feeling lonely as Valerian has a new job as Captain of the force and he is supposed to be getting training from a man who is both a mage and an officer of AURA. That teacher turns out to be Flax. Valerian is having trouble coping with all of his new responsibilities and that of course changes the relationship he has with Quinn.

Then there is Kai and his lover Tenzin. I love Tenzin - a yeti with a heart of gold. Kai is always busy, just like Val and we all know that workaholics don't make for good relationship material. And when Tenzi...yep, not giving away the story line, but my heart broke.

Back to Quinn, Val and Flax. I didn't like Flax at the beginning. He doesn't like Quinn, thinks he's a worthless human. Flax hates the thought that Quinn and Val are together. He feels Val could do so much better, like be with someone like him. So you can see, all good reasons for not liking the man. But I kept reading because of what a certain Seer said - I wanted to see what Flax had coming to him.

There is another intriguing story line here as well. Someone, or something is turning people into stone, and they are leaving no magical trace when they do it. That is enough to have the whole of AURA working overtime. I love the way these authors weave the outside story line through with the events in the characters’ lives. It's brilliantly done.

Flax's comeuppance comes from Sage and Ash - two warrior elves who came through an Event and were suddenly trapped on earth. They are struggling, as any paranormal dumped on earth without a moment's warning would be. Sage's demons are reflections of what Flax went through, was still going through, and it was nice to see Flax doing his bit to help. The senrist idea was interesting. It had come up in book one, because Val used to have one, but it was explored more fully here, and while I was not 100% comfortable with the concept, it was beautifully described and I think Val did the right thing in the end.

I didn't want this book to end, I truly didn't. This has to go down as one of my favorite reads of the year and it will take a while for me to forget it. My review couldn't do this book any true justice. Its complex, layered and yet I never got lost reading it. The love was beautiful, the plot exciting, the sex sensual and while I felt sorry for Arthur, I understood the why behind it. Awesome book.

Favorite Quote: I need a yes. A real yes. I'm not chomping on your ear without one.
